Continuing our pursuit of happiness, we are on a mission to discover if and when we are whining.

Last week you learned that it is essential to notice process and not content if you want to know the psychological truth of anything. Otherwise you are fooled by the words that are inside your head or being said by others.

You also learned that it is better to whine when you feel like whining than it is to depress, repress and deny your whining.  Here is last week’s free holistic psychology article if you have not read it.

I also promised to give you a clear definition of whining and healthy emotional expression this week so you know for sure if you are whining or not.

Huge Difference Between Whining and Emotional Expression

Definition of Whining

Whining is a high-pitched, out of control behavior that keeps you stuck in the victim role. Whining occurs when you feel helpless, hopeless, weak and miserable.  Your energy goes around and around in a circle repeating itself. You hear and say the same words, notes and tones over and over again.

When you whine, you are stuck. This means you do not move forward into positive or healthy energy.   You are in a psychological place that is similar to what physicists call a black hole.  You are stuck in a bottomless pit that is sucking energy from the outside in toward you. Your energy is black, dark, dense, grey, heavy and unhealthy.

Whining is only one of many ways that you feel sorry for yourself.  You also complain, blame, criticize and hide behind the “poor me” image.

I felt sorry for myself for years and my talk therapist never once mentioned this behavior to me. Therefore, I never stopped feeling sorry for myself because I did not know that I was feeling sorry for myself.

Definition of Healthy Emotional Expression

Healthy emotional expression is revealing the truth about how you feel emotionally. Emotional expression is not out of control or unconscious.  You are aware of your body and physical surroundings as you express your emotions and feelings.

As soon as you begin to express how you feel, your emotional state changes and shifts.  You are not stuck in the victim role.  Instead, as you continue to express your real emotions, you move forward so that you experience emotional relief.  You are more aware and alive.

Not only do you feel better when you express your emotions, you have more energy.  Emotional expression immediately adds vital energy to your body and energy field. Naturally, this makes you physically stronger.  Your energy is moving outward and you are not pulling energy toward you into a bottomless pit.

Your energy is colorful, moving, lighter and healthy. Different tones and pitches occur as you continue to express yourself through your natural process until the emotional issue is resolved. Then you feel emotionally stronger and more self-confident.

Notice When You Feel Sorry for Yourself

Awareness is the first step in transformation and successful personal growth. No one likes to admit we are feeling sorry for ourselves; it is just so uncool.

Nevertheless, everyone on the planet feels sorry for themselves from time to time. We learned it from our parents, religions and cultures.

Therefore, do not waste money, time and energy trying to keep the fact that you feel sorry for yourself in your unconscious.  Do not depress, repress or deny your whining.  The consequences of keeping your whining behavior in your unconscious are:

You:
Are unhappy and do not know the reason why.
Are unsatisfied in your relationships with others.
Feel like others do not love you.
Feel like others do not understand you.
Feel alone and isolated.
Think you are better than others.
Think you are worse than others.
Think everyone else is the problem and not you.

Finally, I left talk therapy and began to pay attention to process, my body and energy.  Soon, I noticed that I repeated the same behavior over and over again and this behavior did not bear fruit.

It dawned on me, while sitting in a comfortable chair in my living room, that I was feeling sorry for myself. Oh horrors of horrors! Reading energy, I discovered I was stuck in a black hole feeling sorry for myself and there I was going to stay until I learned a more effective way to get what I needed and wanted.

This awareness turned into an amazing relief.  At last I knew something I was doing that I could actually change.

A reader of The Vibrant Moment expressed how she was feeling about some medical problems she just found out about in a recent email to me. Then she abruptly called herself out on “whining. ” Of course, as soon as she judged herself as whining, she immediately stopped sharing how she was feeling and changed the topic.

Do you block your emotional expressions by calling yourself names?

If you do, you are making sure you do not move forward into new, unexplored emotional territory.  If you want to do transformational work, which means you physically change your energy, you must express your truths no matter what they are at any given moment in time.

Of course, I do not encourage whining. However, are you really whining? Maybe yes and maybe no.   If you want to get to the heart of what is really going on with you psychologically, do not stop your truths at any point in time.

Even if you are whining, stopping yourself in this fashion keeps you from getting down to your unconscious truths.  While knowing the difference between expressing your authentic feelings and whining is important, it is even more important not to block self-expression in the moment it is happening.

This means it is better to whine so you can see that you are whining, rather than stop yourself from whining before you can tell if you are whining or not!  The act of controlling your energy is the oppressive psychological problem, not the whining.

Just imagine if you stepped back and look at your process instead of your words. As a holistic psychologist, I teach you to notice your process so you discover what is really going on inside of you and outside of you.  If you do not let your unconscious material surface, it continues to control you.  The only way to claim your power is to expose your truths.

If you stay stuck in the content, you quickly sink into psychobabble, which is what often happens in regular talk therapy.  You also reinforce your controlling behavior of trying not to whine.  You think that you are whining, complaining and being negative, but are you really?  And if you are, “So what?”

How much power would you have if you learned to notice the how, what, when, where and why behind your words?  When you pay attention to process, you quickly move beyond your thoughts and conditioned reactions into more physical data. Noticing your process gives you the energy needed to master yourself.

It does not matter if you are whining or not.  When you pay attention to your process, you may discover that you were not whining in the first place.  Or you may see that you are whining.  If so, you can learn a more effective way to get what you need or want.

Here is my clinical observation about whining and whiners.  When you judge yourself as whining, there is a high probability that you are not whining.  The whiner usually has no awareness of the fact that she or he is whining.  The whiner does not notice how she is being received by others because she is not conscious of it.

I will explain the energy difference between whining and expressing your authentic feelings and emotions next week.  In the mean time, help me do some research about what I just said about whiners. Observe yourself this week and observe other people. Is my clinical observation correct? Do whiners judge themselves and stop? Or do whiners keep whining?

August 7, 2013 is National Play Day. This is a great reminder for adults and children to get outside and have fun moving and grooving.

So, were some of you able to add more pleasures this week? I sure did. I call vibrant moments being in heaven on earth.

Here is a list of some of my heavenly moments:

Swimming in a beautiful blue pool cleaned and softened by rain water
Swimming slowly on my back looking up at the glorious blue sky
Strolling in Rittenhouse Park while giving and receiving smiles
Cooking walnut crusted trout, Swiss shard and corn on the cob
Eating walnut crusted trout, Swiss shard and corn on the cob
Relaxing in a lounge chair outside looking at green trees and insects flying around
Sipping coffee with bits and pieces of pound cake underneath a canopy of trees
Gently resting my head on my buckwheat pillow in clean sheets
Taking a warm, long shower after hard housework

If you were not successful in enjoying more pleasurable moments this week, ask yourself, “What stopped me?”

In the USA, our Puritan and Germanic backgrounds rewards hard work and staying busy.  If you work hard, you are rewarded.  If you do not stay busy, you are punished.  This means that if you want to avoid punishment you have to keep working and stay busy all the time.  This is what most people do.

Resting, doing nothing, relaxing and enjoying life is a sin. Yes, a sin.

This Puritan Ethic conditioning is hard to break free from once it takes hold in your body and psyche.  If you do not pay attention to how your conditioning stops you from enjoying pleasure, you cannot put into practice the action steps needed to break out of the bad habit of not relaxing.

At the age of 34, I consciously let go of control and relaxed.  Immediately, the most painful guilt experiences crippled me again and brought me back into control.    Every time I relaxed, I felt like a sinner. Every time I experienced pleasure, I felt like I was sinning.

No wonder I had such trouble learning how to relax in the first place! Every time I relaxed, I judged myself as lazy. Or to be more precise, I heard my father’s voice in my head calling me, “Lazy.” His judgment stopped me dead in my tracks and tightened up every muscle in my body.

Later in life when my father was dying, he confessed to me that he desperately wanted nothing more in life but to be able to put his feet up, kick back and relax. But he couldn’t. He just could not relax, no matter what he tried to do.

I suggested to him that he could stop making himself wrong when he relaxed. However, he was never able to rest, do nothing and enjoy just being in the moment. My father died an anxious man. While it is too late for my father, it is not too late for you.

If you listen, you can hear the exact judgments you learned from your parents, teachers and priests.  These mental judgments keep you from relaxing and being in the moment.  You must get rid of your mental judgments if you want to kick back and enjoy the moments of your life.

Of course, when you break free, you experience guilt.

Guilt is a given. This is when you really have to pay attention so you eliminate the irrational judgments in your head and keep moving forward.  If not, guilt puts you right back into darkness, anxiety and depression.

So, using learning research, I felt like a lazy person for a while and continued to relax my body.  I felt like a sinner over and over again, as I continued to enjoy the pleasures of living in the body.

Soon the control guilt had over me began to vanish and I could kick back and enjoy the moment without any guilt what so ever.

How often do you let yourself feel good?

Virginia Johnson, of Masters and Johnson fame, died at the age of 88 last week.  Reading the story of her life in the NY Times on Sunday sure did bring back some fond memories of being trained as a sex therapist at Temple Medical School in 1976.

1976 was a wonderful time to be alive and studying psychology on the East Coast.  Masters and Johnson had studied the physiology of human sexual behavior in a laboratory in Missouri. Their sex research was the basis of our training as sex therapists.

I had the physical facts:
1.  The size of the penis does not affect the pleasure a man can give a woman.
2.  Intercourse is not necessarily the best way to have an orgasm for a woman.
3.  A vaginal orgasm is exactly the same as a clitoral orgasm.
4.  Old people enjoy sex just as much as young people.
5.  Some women can have an orgasm without any physical stimulation at all.

At the Behavior Therapy Unit, we cured premature ejaculation in almost every man who walked in our door.  Premature ejaculation was easy to treat by reducing a man’s anxiety in the sexual situation. Using similar methods we dramatically improved every woman’s sexual response with and without a partner.

I became known as the sex therapist who was effective with the more difficult to treat erectile dysfunction clients and thus began my private practice. 1976 was an exciting time to be alive in Philadelphia, USA.

Controlling your body and emotions are in vogue in 2013.

In sharp contrast, today’s psychologists label you and physicians drug you for sexual problems, anxiety, depression and normal grieving.  Pleasure seems to be a no-no.  Feeling good seems to have gotten a very bad reputation.

Drugs diminish your feeling ability instead of enhancing your feeling ability. Medications impair your ability to have whole body, sensual, delicious orgasms. Please remember, sex is only one of several ways you can experience pleasure and have an orgasm.

If you want to enjoy more vibrant moments and holistic health in your daily life, stay away from drugs and medication. Drugs mask problems, cure nothing and stop you from feeling good.

Do you avoid pleasure in your daily life?

Notice how often you stop yourself from having pleasure this week. Little pleasures, big pleasures. Mental pleasures, body pleasures, heart pleasures.  If you do not let yourself feel good and experience pleasure, you are sure to become weaker and weaker until you get sick.

Before you know it, your mind wanders away, your behavior becomes addictive, your body atrophies and your heart attacks you.  All of these physical results are trying to get your attention. Your real self is screaming at you, “Let me feel good!”

You need pleasure to achieve holistic health, happiness and a sustainable future. Give yourself time every day to receive pleasure in any form. Choose your pleasures based on your personal needs and desires.

Rigidity is not natural.  Living in a box is not normal.

According to quantum physics, you never have to be stuck in anything.  The only way you get stuck is when you control yourself in such a way so that you are forcing yourself to stay rigid. Your own inhibition is what keeps you locked in a boring box.  Inhibition is learned behavior.

This means your brain has to work really, really hard to keep your body and your energy from doing what it automatically wants to do.  Your body and your energy want to move, change and rearrange all the time, all day long.  This natural movement of energy happens inside of every cell in your body and outside in every space around you if you do not actively DO SOMETHING to stop it from happening.

The negative result of trying to keep everything under control is a dramatic depletion of your energy.  Energy depletion is what makes you tired, sick and depressed.  You are using up most of your available energy just to keep yourself in a box.

This is in sharp contrast to using your available energy for fun, pleasure and accomplishing your goals in life.  Let this physical fact soak into your bones so you know how important it is to be aware of your own human energy in everyday life. You can change anytime you are ready to change. You can use the laws of physics to help you enjoy life more fully.

Ask yourself:
Do you really want to use your energy to stay in a box?
Or are you just conditioned to “not move” without the means to stop this from happening?

Since you have to exert a great deal of effort and energy in order to stay stuck in one form, one behavior, one identity, one ego, you can stop putting your energy in this direction.  If you stop controlling yourself and inhibiting yourself, you naturally become your best self.

Are you interested in the nature of reality?

If so, you are interested in metaphysics. Metaphysics is a traditional philosophy that literally means that which follows physics.

Aristotle wrote 14 books on metaphysics during the time in history when seeking guidance at Delphi was routine practice.  The most educated leaders and generals respected the answers received from the Priestess of Apollo.

Here are a few truths about Quantum Physics to help you explore the “stuff” that is in between the matter you relate to, the inner knowing that exists inside of you and the outer knowledge that you can tap into anytime you choose.

The Five Main Ideas of Quantum Physics:

1. Energy is not continuous, but comes in small, discrete units.
2. Elementary particles behave like both particles and waves.

Another way to say this is that the real world is nothing like you think it is.  As a holistic psychologist, I can tell you this is exciting mental health news! Holistic health and vibrant moments are a definite possibility for everyone–no matter what.

What this means for you is that you:
1.  Can let go of your false beliefs about what reality is.
2.  Can let go of your conditioning about what you should and should not do.
2.  Perceive new, more helpful information directly from reality.
3.  Can change anything you want to change within the laws of physics and metaphysics.
4.  Have the power to affect matter and create new forms.

You do not have to hold on to what you think is true, because what you think is true is probably not true at all!  Or if it is true, it is only true because you continue to hold on to your false beliefs. This means you behave in such a way that you reinforce your rigid thoughts and make them come true for you.

Niels Bohr said, “Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.”  Reality blows your mind.   Once your mind is blown, you can move away from your rigid thoughts into more effective, creative thoughts.

When something upsets you this week, write it down on a piece of paper.  Any problem or situation that you start obsessing about goes on your piece of paper.

After you write your problem down, then read it out loud. This is what you think is true. Next, say out loud, three times, “This can change.” “This can change.” “This can change.”

Notice how your whole body feels when you say, “This can change.”

It seemed like nothing mattered anymore. I didn’t care if I went swimming or not, even though swimming is my favorite activity. I did not care what I ate, even though looking forward to delicious food and yummy tastes used to be a daily pleasure.

How often to you feel blah, blue or bored?

I mentioned two weeks ago that it is easy to get stuck in depression during the natural grieving progress.  Take note of the losses you have suffered recently that you need to grieve so that you can move forward instead of getting stuck in depressed energy.

Have you lost your:
Job?
House?
Partner?
Youth?
Health?
Freedom?
Best friend?
Beloved animal?
Beloved trees?

When grieving any type of loss, the natural process of feeling your authentic emotions takes many turns and twists until you begin to feel better and heal your heart.  Anywhere along the natural, normal stages of the grieving process, you can become blue, melancholy or depressed.

To heal your heart, you need to feel sad and not get stuck in depression.

This means you need to feel blue and keep moving through your grief as your emotional energy carries you along your own unique emotional healing process.

If you begin to feel melancholy, this means you are slowing down. If you are slowing down, this means you are inhibiting some of your authentic emotions and feelings as they surface.  If melancholy lingers too long, you are slowing down your energy so you become blah and stop enjoying life.

If you enter the mental health state called depression, you have inhibited your healthy emotional energy so much that you are stuck. Depression means you are not moving forward at all.   Depression is a dark, heavy state where you are numb and nothing matters.  You have stopped feeling blue and as a result you do not enjoy anything anymore.

Your vital emotions keep you moving forward in the natural grieving process.

The Indians call the emotional body, which is part of your energy field, the vital body.  This is because your vital body is full of colorful, strong, potent emotional energy when you are healthy and emotionally strong. When you are stuck in depression, your vital body is dark, grey and dense.

When you inhibit your healing emotions of grief you get stuck in depression.  Losses are natural and normal life experiences.  The feelings of sadness about your loss are also natural and normal no matter what medical authorities or friends tell you.

Give yourself permission to fully experience your loss.

Allow your grief and grieving to be natural and normal so that you heal your heart and become emotionally stronger.  When I noticed I was depressed, I decided to get back into my grief and grieving.  To help me get out of the dumps, I began to sing and hum the blues.

I put my comforting audio in my ears to help me stay in the hurt so I transformed my loss into more vital energy and aliveness.  Thank goodness, swimming is pleasurable again.

A reader of The Vibrant Moment wrote me this week and asked a very important question about fear. Below you will find information about how to deal with fear effectively so that you do not live your life with regrets.

“Dear Dr. Jeanette,

I wanted to thank you for your Vibrant Moment newsletter. It always seems to deliver a key message that somehow manages to enlighten whatever I am going through in that moment.

I appreciate what you have written about peak performance and the importance of relaxing. I am wondering though how you approach fear? Sometimes I feel fear is so important. When I look back on my life, the most terrifying moments have also been the most rewarding. I do not ever regret doing a scary thing, but I often regret not trying a scary thing.

What role does fear play and how might we negotiate with it to go for what we want? Can it be useful or is it a hindrance? Can fear be positive?”

This question goes to the heart of why fear must be properly addressed if you want to enjoy more vibrant moments, relaxation, peace of mind, holistic health and peak performances.  You do not want fear to stop you from living fully, richly and with meaning and purpose.   However, if you deny your fear and pretend like you are not afraid, you fool yourself into thinking you are fine and you are not fine.

The authentic emotion of fear is always helpful, positive and good.

One of the major ways my new holistic psychology approach is different from others is that I teach you how to use fear effectively.  Fear is real and helps you move safely through real dangers so that you are on solid ground as you go along the pathway of transformation and personal growth.

Anxiety is not helpful, good or positive.

Anxiety is not the same energy as fear.  If you deny or exaggerate your fear, you upset your body and your emotional self so much you become anxious.  The more you deny or exaggerate your real fear, the more anxious you become.

Anxiety is an unhealthy response to any situation.   Anxiety is like static on the radio; it interferes with anything you do.  This is the reason your anxiety must be reduced if you want to experience peak performances and peak experiences.   You cannot make love, ace the putt or fulfill your dreams if you are anxious.  Anxiety tightens your body, making you physically and emotionally sick.

On the other hand, fear is your ticket to freedom, joy and getting what you want. This means you must learn to feel your real fear so you use its authentic energy to safely move toward your desired goal.  The title of the second hour of audio in my Opening the Heart series is called, “Fear: The Pathway to Freedom and Joy.” This title expresses the physical truth that the real energy of fear leads you directly and safely to that which you desire.

Making friends with your fear allows you to negotiate a safe pathway so you do what you want with your life with mastery and success.  If you deny or exaggerate your fear, you will not get what you want because you will be too anxious even if you think you are just fine.

Therefore, it is very important to feel your real fear because it keeps you safe so you know when you are secure enough to let go of control and enjoy whole body relaxation, peak performances and joy.

Definition of Stuck: Not moving forward. Living a mundane and ordinary life. No passion and joy.

Do you work, eat, sleep and repeat the same behaviors day after day? If so, you are going through your life without feelings and emotions.  This means you are stuck in an ordinary and mundane life.

This phrase, “ordinary and mundane,” is taken from Dr. Charles Tart’s book, Waking Up: Overcoming the Obstacles to Human Potential, which I read in the late 1980s.  “The Vibrant Moment” exists to help you wake up and do a whole lot more than just get through your day.

How Awake and Alive Are You?

It is possible that ordinary consciousness may feel normal for you because you have not experienced anything else in so long you have forgotten the delicious extraordinary feelings you were born with.  Therefore, you may not be aware that you are living the moments of your life without passion, fire and joy.

On the other hand, perhaps you have enjoyed vibrant moments, peak performances and peak experiences from time to time.  However, stress and anxiety have unconsciously taken over your waking life.  As a result, you have settled back down into ordinary consciousness without even knowing it.

Or maybe you are grieving a great loss.  It is easy to get stuck in the grieving progress and become depressed instead of moving forward.  You may have dropped down out of ordinary mundane consciousness into a deeper level of depression.

Whatever the reason, you may be stuck in routine living, depression and anxiety without even knowing you are stuck in the daily grind of the walking dead.

To have more vibrant moments, you need to know when, where, how and why you are stuck.  To know when you are stuck, you have to increase your awareness. To increase your awareness, you need outside feedback that gives you some degree of objective data.

This means you need many different kinds of feedback systems that alert you to where your mental health, emotional security and body awareness are at any given moment in time.  I use mentors, groups and holistic health practitioners to wake me up and notify me that I have gotten stuck in the ordinary and mundane.  I also have my own daily feedback barometers.

Use Daily Activities to Notice When You Are Stuck

Just getting through a swim is not the same thing as enjoying a swim.  As a swimmer, I use how I feel and how much I enjoy my swim as a barometer of my state of being in the world.  I have many different kinds of swimming experiences.  Each swimming experience gives me concrete feedback about my consciousness and state of being alive.

There is the:
1. Delicious, flowing through the sensuous water with my whole body swim
2. Enjoyable, relaxing swim, where the mind is quiet and still
3. Fun, playful, feel good swim, where there is no thinking
4. Mean and lean exercise swim
5.  So-so swim, where the thoughts distracted me more than not.
6.  Did I even swim? swim, where my brain was in charge

I love swimming so much I don’t have a bad swim or a boring swim. But you may want to add bad and boring along with other specific qualities to your own feedback list.

Create Your Own Aliveness Feedback Barometer

To create your own Aliveness Barometer, think about some experience you do daily or several times a week.  For example, if you take walks, you can use your walking experiences. Make a list of all the difference kinds of walks you have.  Describe your walks honestly so that you can use each walk to increase your awareness of how present, alive and vibrant you are in the moment.

Then use your feedback to become more awake and alive.  If your feedback tells you that you are stuck in the ordinary and mundane, this means you are anxious. The less you enjoy something, the more anxious you are.

To correct the problem you need to begin to feel your body more and feel your emotions more. These two sensory experiences will start to bring more life energy into
your daily grind.

You only have one life to live. Get unstuck and allow more passion, joy and excitement into your precious moments. Reduce your anxiety and relax your body so you can perceive
the colors that are always dancing and playing around you before it is too late.

Peak performances, peak experiences and vibrant moments do not happen by accident. They happen because you show up and allow yourself to be in your body and emotions in physical reality. They happen because you reduce your anxiety and
relax into your body.

A reader asked an important question that goes straight to the heart of the problem many intellectual people have in overcoming performance anxiety.  “What to do when your thoughts tell you that being natural is unnatural?”

Unfortunately, the brain is a great big bully.  Your brain often gives you information that is irrational and downright wrong.  As a result, you have many subconscious and silent thoughts that are incorrect and self-destructive.

These negative thoughts are universal and have been repeatedly documented in research studies. Popular culture has made us aware that we have an Inner Critic who spews out nasty thoughts.

When negative thoughts sent out their poison, your body automatically becomes tense and tight.  When your body becomes tense and tight you are anxious.  This anxiety builds up in your nervous system, muscles and blood flow making you weak and uncomfortable so that you cannot perform at your best in any situation.

When you are anxious you are unable to:
1. Relax
2. Move
3. Express your emotions
4. Be spontaneous
5. Be open
6. Assert yourself
7. Perform at your best

So, let’s say you want to learn how to relax and have peak performances.  Maybe you want to perform better at work, be a better psychologist, play for an orchestra or be more successful in the romantic department.

Just as you begin to let go of the tension in your body, your Inner Critic tells you that you are being unnatural. If you continue to try to relax and follow the instructions from your relaxation therapist, your brain begins to attack you even more and make fun of you.

In this case, most of you can see that the Inner Critic is reversing reality on you.  Your thoughts are calling you unnatural when you are trying to become more natural.  You know this and yet these thoughts still control you and stop you from relaxing.

You already know for sure that relaxing your body is definitely natural and normal.  It is not unnatural to be in the state of relaxation.  You know that peak performances can only occur when you are relaxed and not anxious, yet you cannot relax your body.

Your toxic thoughts continue to confuse you and scare you. Your body has an automatic reaction of fear that makes you unsure of yourself.  Since you continue to listen to your toxic thoughts and let them control you, this means there is a part of you that believes them to be true.

So this is the key.

You must find the part of you who still believes these thoughts to be true and help this part of you see that these thoughts are reversing realty on you.  Then you will be able to stop believing irrational thoughts so that you can relax your body in comfort.

This is where you can improve your success rate by seeking guidance and outside feedback to help you. It is very hard to know which thoughts are false and which ones are helpful when they are your thoughts!

You will find working with a trained holistic psychologist or emotional health mentor will dramatically improve your success rate so that you stop your poisonous thoughts from tightening up your body.
