I think it is strange that people rush to get physical
check ups once a year but they do not get a mental check up.

You need a mental health checkup because your mind creates
the problems in your life, including the physical problems.

When your mental health is not good, the quality of your
life is not good. You experience poor health, poor
relationships, poor quality of life.

Here are some questions to assist you in checking up on
your mental health.

Answer these questions honestly with either a “Yes,”
“Sometimes” or “No.”

1. I am happy and excited to get up in the morning and
go to work.
2. I relax my body and rest several times a day, throughout
the day. (This does not include watching TV, reading
or computer time.)
3. I do not think the same thought more than three times.
4. I know what I am feeling in the moment.
5. I can express what I am feeling to others.
6. I move around freely and am physically active during
the day.
7. I am aware of my physical surroundings and feel
connected to these realities throughout the day.
8. I have a purpose and am fulfilling it.
9. I am comfortable with others in silence.
10. I am comfortable with myself in silence.
11. I am a conscious breather and notice when I stop
breathing fully into my belly.
12. I am comfortable being excited and animated.
I3. I am spontaneous and free.
14. I experience full body vibrant moments at least
twice a week.

For each “Yes,” give yourself a 1, for each “Sometimes”
a 2, for each “No” a 3. Add them up for your total.

Look below and get your results.

14-19—You have a High Quality of Life and Good Mental
Health, you probably are actively engaged in self
improvement.
20-25—You are moving toward life and need to amp up the
areas where you notice yourself missing out.
26-30—You are missing out on many vibrant moments of
living.  Your life is lackluster, ordinary and mundane.
31-37—You are moving away from life and need to become
more aware and alive.
38- 42 —Your Quality of Life and Mental Health needs
serious improvement.

Take one of the questions you answered “No” to and
begin to shift it into a “Sometime.”  To be successful,
you need to use a skillful holistic psychologist, coach,
mentor, or teacher who can teach you new skills which will
increase your body and energy awareness.

If you are a psychologist, physician, massage therapist or coach:
Pay attention to your own mind and how it causes problems in
your life. Notice how your thoughts control and inhibit
your vibrant moments.  Then notice how your clients let
their mind dominate their lives. Help them expand their
self-concept beyond their mind.

If you are a parent: Never underestimate how your mental
health affects your children. Notice your mind and how you
use it to control yourself and your children. An unhealthy
mind can quickly destroy a happy family outing.

You have the power and ability to prevent poor health,
poor relationships and poor quality of life by improving
your mental health.

Get a mental health check up and follow through with
effective actions.

What does it take for you to be genuinely happy and healthy?
What is the essence of what you need to know to be effective?

In 2002 at a conference in Mankato, a woman came up to say
hello to me after my workshop, “New and Exciting Ways to
Heal Your Mind and Body.” I did not recognize her.  She
reminded me that she was a client I had worked with 20 years
earlier in Philadelphia!

After our enthusiastic hugs, she offered to tell me the one
thing that had helped her the most that she learned from our
work together. Quickly, I shook my head, eager to hear this
precious gift of feedback.

She touched her heart and said, “You taught me the difference
between how power feels in my body and how control feels in my body.
I use it to this day to know the difference.”

Wow! In the early 1980’s, when this woman was my client, I
was just beginning to develop my new body-emotional-energy
approach.  This was the best outcome data I could have
received.

Breaking away from the traditional models of psychology had
been difficult and scary all along the way for me. So her words
were like music to my ears.

Her feedback reveals the essence of what you need to learn in
order to become powerful and effective.

You need to know the difference between control and power. Then
you need to be able to feel this difference in your own body.

You need to know what control feels like in your body because it
is unhealthy for you.  No matter what you think, say or do,
controlling energy is stagnant.  Stagnant energy makes you miserable
and sick.

You also need to know what real power feels like in your body
because it is healthy for you. Power is flowing energy. Flowing
energy, no matter what you think, say or do, makes you healthy
and happy.

Being able to sense and feel this difference, puts the healthy part
of you in the driver’s seat. The unhealthy part of you, cannot fool
you any more.

If you are a psychologist, massage therapist or coach: Learn the
difference between control and power. Then learn to feel this
difference in your own body. Soon, you will not be fooled by your
clients’ reactions, defensiveness and manipulations.  Otherwise, you
may react to your clients’ control issues and get entangled in
unhealthy relationship dynamics.

If you are a parent: Wouldn’t it be great if you could teach your
child to know what is healthy for her and what is not healthy for
her by how it feels in her own body? Her self esteem would skyrocket.
Children learn by modeling your behavior. Show them the way.

The mind is a funny thing. It can be brilliant or it can
be deadly.

If you do not tame your thoughts and bring them into
balance with your body, heart and soul, your brain can
scare you to death. It can also obsess about nonsense,
create misery and keep you totally out of the moment.

One single thought can give your whole body and nervous
system a serious shock. I would say the voltage of one
thought I had this week while standing at my kitchen window
was stronger than the electric shock I used to get when I
touched the electric cow fence on my farm as a child by
mistake.

Honestly, I cannot even remember exactly what the thought
was, but it was not pretty, loving or kind. It shocked me
right out of the moment. I noticed the shock to my nervous
system and brought myself back into the physical. So I was
back to breathing and feeling in seconds.

However, this shocking experience reminded me of the strength,
power and energy of my thoughts. I know how outside factors
affect my mind so I do not watch television and I am very
careful of the movie images I feed it.

However, since the Japanese earthquake I have been reading
the online news more than usual. In addition, with Bin
Laden’s dramatic death there are many images of violence
around me.

The thought that flashed without invitation in my mind seemed
to be a creative take off of some of these scenes I had been
looking at online. Our minds are powerful AND creative!

If you are a parent:  Notice your own thoughts and how they
affect you and your child. Also know that your children are
affected by the images they see in the news, television,
movies and games.

If you are a psychologist, massage therapist or coach:  Do not
encourage obsessive thinking with your clients.  When you let
your clients talk and talk about the same thing you are
reinforcing this behavior and making sure they obsess. Instead,
help your clients sense the energy of their obsessions. Teach
them to sense the energy of their thoughts as separate from
their feelings. Then teach them how to stop repeating the same
thoughts over and over again.

Spring clean your mind by getting rid of rotten thoughts that
have accumulated over the winter and years. It will
free up more room for health and happiness.

Being alive and feeling good is your birthright.

This is the reason I want to live in as many vibrant moments
as I can during my lifetime. This is also the reason I write
this newsletter. My goal is to help you experience a vibrant
moment or two before you die.

I want you to enjoy being alive and feeling good.

To be successful, you need to experience what being
in the moment feels like in your body. Then you will know how
to return to vibrant moments more often. My hope is that you
get addicted to them like I am.

It was a double blossom bright pink cherry tree on the
river walk in Philadelphia in 1976, that taught me how to
enter and be in a vibrant moment.  It was a Sunday afternoon
shortly after I finished my post doc at Temple Medical School.

My husband and I were spending the afternoon underneath a grove
of these bright pink trees on the lovely Delaware river.
Suddenly, as I lay on the ground, surrounded by pink petals,
I dropped into my first vibrant moment as a psychologist!

Naturally, like you, I had many vibrant moments as a child.

However, graduate school seemed to take them all away. I was so
removed from vibrant moments that when I noticed I was in the
moment, it felt like a new experience.

So, if you live near a cherry tree get out and spend a few hours
with this loving tree before its blooms disappear. If you don’t
have a cherry tree, substitute any other tree as your mentor.

Trees live in vibrant moments all the time.
