====================

Do you have a mess you need to clean up?

Could be the mess in your basement, the thoughts of perfection in your mind or the defensive energy that tightens your body.

All of these represent a mess. Your chaos can be literal, disguised, or denied! If you are obsessive compulsive and maintain a sense of control over your outside world you still have disorder inside you that needs to be acknowledged and cleaned up. If your body gets tight, for sure, you have a mess that needs to be exposed, owned, and cleaned up.

Spring cleaning is a necessary part of the transformational process. Having a mess that needs to be cleaned is essential. If you do not have a mess, this means you are controlling yourself and your environment so much you are not transforming energy. This means you are stuck in denial or perhaps something worse.

If you are controlling yourself so that you do not think you have a mess, let go of control. When you let go of control your disarray is exposed. You have been controlling yourself precisely because you did not want to make a mess or be a mess. Change this into being proud of your jumbo jumble and know that you have let go of your controlling ego state.

If you see your mess in the basement, take action and throw away the garbage. If you disguise or deny your chaos, help yourself by addressing the reasons you are too scared and anxious to let go of control. You cannot flow, change, create, and transform energy without letting go of control.

When you let go of control, your chaos becomes obvious. To grow, you must make a mess and then clean up your mess. Just like a child who is finger painting and all covered with paint who may one day be a famous artist. You must give yourself the freedom to make a mess and be a mess in order to create your masterpiece.

Creativity is the energy of spring. Get busy changing, flowing, and transforming energy so the lazy days of summer can be enjoyed.

====================

Do you try to avoid being hurt?

Many people do.

However, if you are a regular reader of The Vibrant Moment, you know there is an avoidance learning principle that adults and children need to know and understand in order to flourish.

Avoidance Learning Principle

The extensive psychological research in operant and classical conditioning since 1924 reveals that the more you avoid something, the weaker you become.

For example, if you have social anxiety you experience anxiety when you get ready to go to a party. You avoid the party, which avoids your anxiety, which makes you immediately more comfortable.

However, when you avoid the party, your avoidance behavior does not do anything to prevent your anxiety symptoms from occurring again and again in the future. As a matter of fact, your avoidance behavior is reinforced and you are more likely to avoid the next time. This means you will be more anxious the next time and it will be harder for you to go to a party.

Apply this Learning Principle to your Emotional Distress.

The more you try not to be hurt in your relationships, the weaker you become. The more you avoid being close to others in a relationship, the more isolated you become. Your sense of self gets smaller and smaller and your anxiety about being hurt gets bigger and bigger. Soon, you live in a tiny box and your body and mind begins to get sick and feeble.

To top it off, the worst result of your avoidance conditioning is, you get hurt anyway. Yes, you get hurt no matter what! You feel hurt by others even though you are living in a box because you do not want to get hurt by others.

In physical reality, which is the area outside of your box, it is not possible to avoid getting hurt by other people. No, it is just not possible to be a sensitive human being and not get hurt by other human beings. Just as it is not possible to avoid anxiety and go to a party.

Put Learning Research Facts into Action

Not only do you need to know and understand how you learned a behavior that is unhelpful to you. You also need to take an action step and put your knowledge to good use. You must actively unlearn your self-destructive avoidance behavior if you want to be mentally healthy and physically strong.

Therefore, you must stop avoiding hurt, now or later. There is no other way to achieve natural health and wellness. You must stay with yourself when you feel hurt and welcome hurt when it arrives.

Staying with yourself through hurt, loss, and grief is a necessary emotional health skill you need to learn in order to be effective in your relationships. If you are a parent you need to learn these essential emotional health skills so you model them for your children.

Color Therapy: The Power of Pink for Personal Growth

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Wear Pink.

====================

How do you feel around pink?
Does pink attract you or repel you?

In 2006, a small county jail in Texas started using pink. They dressed their inmates in pink jumpsuits and made them sleep on pink sheets and wear pink slippers. Even the walls and the bars of the cells were painted pink.

“I wanted to stop reoffenders,” the sheriff of Mason County, Clint Low, told the Associated Press. The pink jumpsuits were intended to act as a deterrent and stop inmates returning to jail, the pink walls were intended to calm tempers at the cramped prison.

The sheriff reported that the reoffending rate was down by 70% since he introduced the pink regime. He added that there have been no fights among inmates since the walls were painted pink. According to the sheriff, the men did not like pink so they behaved themselves to avoid the pink in the jail.

No fights? Amazing. Pink stops violence? Wow! Do these results make you stop and consider the power of pink? Most women, not all, but most, are comfortable wearing pink.

Pink is a heart color. Pink makes us feel good all over because we feel loved. We love pink and enjoy being around pink. Sensitive men are usually comfortable around pink and can wear pink with self-confidence. But your typical male or criminal does not often show up wearing beautiful shades of pink.

Perhaps the sheriff’s reason the pink jail had such a powerful effect on his criminals is incorrect. Maybe being around all that pink energy and pink vibrations actually changed how these men felt about their feelings, authentic emotions, and loving heart. Maybe the pink in the jail actually transformed these criminals into better citizens.

After all, in regular life, men are not allowed to wear, love, and enjoy pink. Men are taught to avoid pink and never be soft and tender. Pink is female, girly, and gay. Could it be that spending time in the presence of pink vibrations transformed these men into better citizens because their emotional vibrations changed?

I suspect the men enjoyed being hugged all over by the loving heart, pink energy. Yummy. A follow up study is certainly needed to see if these men changed their relationship to pink. Then we could discover the real reason these men did not want to break the law and be mean anymore.

In any case, check out the power of pink for yourself.

Mental Health Advice: Celebrate Earth Day with Cherry Trees

====================

How do you honor Earth Day?
How do you stay healthy in mind and body?

Put in your intention to honor Mother Earth on Earth Day 2014 in some way that benefits you. Nature is your mother and the closer you are to her healthy ways, the better. If you have wandered off and away from Mother Earth into your computer and cell phone, it is time to come back to her.

If you feel depressed, down, tired, lonely, or looney, find a tree to spend the day with or at least a few hours. My favorite trees, which are in bloom right now, in the marvelous Philadelphia area, are the cherry trees.

There are many varieties and the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia has blessed our city with an abundance of cherry trees to sit under. I know many of these cherry trees personally and visit as they reach their peak: some on foot, many on bicycle, and some out of town in the country gardens. This past weekend I was at Morris Arboretum on Saturday and Tyler Arboretum on Sunday.

When you find a tree to spend the day with, notice how you change and shift over the course of the time you spend with your tree. Each tree is different. Every tree has a purpose, with a unique energy that it gives to you, a recent human being on the planet.

I hope you are able to find a cherry tree to connect with for a few hours. If you do, please notice how the cherry trees affect your body and mood. Pay attention to your energy field and how you feel as you leave your tree. Write me and tell me what you notice. I would love to collect a little research.

You need to take a blanket so you can relax on the ground in comfort. You could bring an old fashion book, pen, and paper to journal with, but nothing to keep you in beta brainwaves for long.

You want to let go of control and resonate with the energy of the cherry tree. Take a nap; change your body position to stay comfortable. Walk around; look at the blooms often against the blue sky. Feel the ground, your body, and all the energy around you. Drop down into gravity.

When you relax into the vibrations of the tree, you will know it.  You will feel different.  After all, you are moving out of the boring, controlling mind, into the full body experience of being alive in the physical world around you.

Appreciate the fact that you have entered a vibrant moment.  Enjoy and repeat.

====================

Are you afraid of losing a loved one?

For the second time in my life I was in a full-blown panic. I knew my 85-year-old mother’s heart was out of rhythm and planed to visit her in two weeks when her treatments were scheduled.  However, her physician just informed her, based on her stress test, that she had had a heart attack sometime within the last seven years that she did not know she had experienced. Due to the heart attack, he wanted to move up the procedures he hoped would correct her heart problem. He was afraid.

Over my 36 years of being in clinical practice, I have noticed the pattern that women and men often experience anxiety and panic attacks after one or both of their parents die. What is this panic and anxiety that gets triggered? I learn a great deal about human nature by observing myself as well as others.

The first time I experienced panic was when I thought my lover was going to leave me. Panic and anxiety are not the same thing as fear. Panic overwhelms you and consumes you. Its energy is sudden, intense and you are at its mercy unless you have the tools to transform its overwhelming energy into real fears, real problems, and real solutions.

What about you?

When you lose a deep, strong emotional connection with another human being or animal what happens inside of you? You may have experienced a high pitched anxiety and denied it. Or, you may have acknowledged that you were in a panic. In either case, it will help you now, if you become more aware of your real fear and irrational anxiety. Then you will handle your inevitable losses without being blind-sided by denial.

In addition, if you have ever experienced an emotional pain or loss that you have not healed, your heart is weak because it is still broken. The Broken Heart Syndrome, also called, stress cardiomyopathy, is real and scientifically established. For more information visit the American Heart Association.

Unfortunately, modern medicine can only correct Broken Heart Syndrome by repairing the physical damage after it has occurred. This means it is your job to heal your physical heart from past and current emotional pain. The only way to mend your heartache is to become emotionally healthy and strong. Healing your heart is an emotionally expressive and energetic process that occurs over time, resulting in a stronger physical heart.

I was the child that loved to go away from mother and explore the world. I did not get easily scared and run back to her for security. Nevertheless, my panic was strong, real, and humbling.  As soon as I was able to rearrange everything so I could go to her side, my panic receded. I was no longer helpless. Real fears, real problems, and real solutions returned.

All three of mother’s children were by her side as she successfully moved through her medical procedures. She saw our smiling faces before and after her surgeries. She was bathed in the love she gave us. Her heart is back in tune and all is well.

However, her death is inevitable as is mine. I am moving forward in being present with myself as her death process unfolds. You too, can prepare for inevitable emotional losses by becoming emotionally stronger and more secure.

The human heart is weak when emotions are blocked, denied, or exaggerated. However, your heart is amazingly resilient when love is the energy that radiates outward. Love is the strongest energy on this blue planet. Make sure your heart is full of love!

Self-Esteem Tip: Reduce Your Anxiety to Get Comfortable

====================

Being comfortable with yourself is not simple, easy, or clear. One person can be self-confident about how they dress, another feels proud when they create new software. One person can be sure of how they relate to others, while another is certain they can make plenty of money. However, these single talents do not necessarily create a person who is comfortable with themselves as they move about the world.

Consider, the loud-mouthed man in the train car behind me right this minute. He is saying over and over again, “It doesn’t matter what you think about me. All that matters is what I think about me. I am the only one who stands in my way.” He is saying all the “right” things that could make you “think” he posses self-confidence.

However, from his volume, tones, pitch and energy you know he is suffering from extremely low self-esteem. His repetition could indicate a more serious mental health problem. In any case, he thinks he has self-esteem and he does not.

Often, the people who think they are self-confident and are not, are the ones in charge of Every-Thing. Every-Thing refers to governments, religions, corporations, banks, education, medicine, and psychology. These are the people who run the world and tell us what we can do and what we cannot do and how we must do what we do.

So, what is this elusive thing called self-esteem? Where is it and how can you get more of it?  Being comfortable with yourself in your physical body, in space, is the true measure of self-confidence. Naturally, the more situations you are comfortable in, the better.  Also, take note of when you are comfortable being uncomfortable.

It is only a self-confident man who admits he doesn’t know something, needs help, and is confused. It is the self-confident woman who admits she is fearful, anxious, or unsure. Becoming comfortable with all the different aspects of your body, mind, and heart is the pathway to genuine self-esteem. There are plenty of aspects to being human that will keep your personal growth and professional development programs active for the rest of your life.

So, no matter where you rate yourself on self-esteem, take note of the places you are comfortable and enjoy them. Comfortable means relaxed, with little tension in your body. Comfortable means no thought in your mind that makes you feel bad and tighten up.

Pay attention to the times you are uncomfortable and see what makes you anxious. Invest time, effort, and money into reducing your anxiety. Without anxiety, you become more comfortable in more places, with a greater variety of people. The more your anxiety comes down, the more your self-esteem goes up.

The more self-confidence you have, the more comfortable you are being in the world. Soon, you kick back and enjoy being yourself in a situation where you used to be uncomfortable. When you notice this new behavior, you are surprised and pleased with yourself.

====================

Walking up to my house, eager to get out of the cold, a 60ish looking man called out to me, “Hello Doris.” His energy stopped me as I was unlocking my door. I turned around to see an old, weathered man standing on the sidewalk I did not recognize. Yet, he knew me. Obviously, he wanted to talk, so I moved closer to see who he was.

When he started to speak again, I recognized him immediately as a man I did know who is in his fifties. About 10 years ago a friend of mine divorced him. He had always been friendly toward me, so I wanted to be as patient and loving as I could be.

However, let’s call him “Ralph,” has always been one of those people I am eager to get away from.  I have a visceral response of wanting to move away as fast as possible. Nevertheless, I was friendly with him because I could feel his need to connect. Our conservation quickly revealed that he has not talked to his son since the divorce. His emotional pain was palpable.

“Reach out to your son, you reach out to him, “I said in my motherly southern accent, as I headed toward my door because I was cold. He immediately talked about how crazy the family was and on and on. I said a few more times, “You are the adult, reach out to your son.” Finally, I said with complete honesty and heart felt compassion, “Give up your rigidity. Give up being right, give in. Give up your rigidity.”

I wished him well as I turned and went into my warm house and closed the door. His rigidity is what makes me want to get away from him. His rigidity is what makes his son not want to talk to him. His rigidity is what stops people from snuggling up with him. As a result, he is isolated, lonely and aging quickly.

My rigidity is what makes people want to get away from me. Your rigidity is what makes others want to get away from you. Take a look in the mirror. Feel your body. Where is the tension in your body? Trust me, you have some. Each week my massage therapist finds new spots and keeps working on the chronic painful areas.

You may not be as isolated as this lonely man but you are probably pushing people away without knowing that is what you are doing. Pay attention to when others consistently do not move closer to you. It could have something to do with you and your rigidity.

After you to get to know your rigidity, which is any sort of tension in your body, take responsibility for your ego persona. Label it; give it a name so you can talk about your false self with others. Mine is called Dr. Tightass. I know it is hard to see your rigidity but it is even harder to keep it. Rigid mind, bodies, and energy make you sick, lonely, and isolated.

Without your mental judgments you are soft, warm, and inviting. People move close and want to stay awhile.

====================

Bright sunlight shining through my tall, majestic orchid stalk, with 22 gorgeous blossoms, is the first thing I experience in the morning when I open my eyes. Bending over toward my bed, the delicate shades of orchid-colored leaves kiss me good morning.

Beauty exists in the world. Thank the Goddess. Without it, I would be lost.

How often do you:
Look at beauty?
Seek beauty?
Create beautiful things.
Buy beautiful things.
See yourself as beautiful?

When you see beauty around you, the beauty sees you too. Humans often think too much, missing the vibrant moments that abound. If your thoughts are the sum total of your experience, you are missing reality. The real world is outside of your head, doing just fine.

I bought my Cymbidium Orchid plant about 30 years ago when I was sad, lonely, and in the middle of healing my broken heart. More years than not, this large-flowered species, from the Himalayas and China, blooms for me right here in Center City Philadelphia. This year I was blessed with two stalks. One year I was graced with three.

Please take a moment to enjoy her beauty with me by clicking on this link.

Right now, because I spent six weeks away from my beautiful orchid this winter, (they bloom for months,) I am cherishing the last few weeks of her beauty. When I stand in front of her essence, I want to dive into the center of one of her lustrous petals and stay there forever. Alas, I cannot, and she is slowly fading.

This means, I must turn my attention to the outdoor beauty that has already begun to spring forth out of this cold American winter. The early blooming cherry trees are getting ready to move. The purple and yellow crocus are out in Filter Park and the beauty of spring is truly coming.

Please, don’t miss the vibrant moments of life that surround you. Reality is present all the time. It is you who are missing. Slow down and allow yourself to sense, feel, taste, touch, and be apart of the beauty around you.

Say out loud to yourself every time you appreciate the beauty around you, “I am beautiful.” It does not matter how old you are, what gender, or how many marks you have on your skin, you are perceiving the beauty outside of you via the beauty of yourself.

You are beautiful. Let your beauty inspire your brain, heart, body, cells, and energy field with natural health and wellness. When you resonate with beauty, you are beautiful, and the beauty loves you back.

Feel what lives in the space between you and the beauty that you love.

Personal Growth Tip: Be Like Elvis Presley, Use Your Gifts

====================

On my 2013 fall trip to Memphis, I did not look forward to the tour of Graceland that was definitely part of the agenda. My partner loves Elvis, has always loved Elvis, and even on rare occasions, sings Elvis. Elvis was ok with me, but nothing special. I expected gaudy, crowded, noisily nonsense every step of the way.

I was wrong. There were crowds and the shops did have glitter. But the person, Elvis Presley, moved me beyond my imagination. He touched me, like I had never let him touch me. His heart and soul still lives on and can be felt all around Graceland.

Graceland itself is a small, tasteful mansion previously owned by a physician and his wife. It is not gaudy or flashy. No, after visiting Graceland, I have tremendous respect for Elvis Presley. He was a highly sensitive person who was able to express his authentic emotions in an effective way that connected with billions of people around the world.

Getting to know him, by feeling his energy at Graceland, I was deeply touched by his life and ability to be true to himself. How rare and wonderful to have a gift and be able to use your gift so effectively. I honor and respect Elvis Presley and what he did with his life. He had courage.

This little boy, born in Mississippi, grew up to have an amazing positive effect on the world by using his natural born talents and gifts. Elvis was an empath. He felt everything. He felt the music, the words, the emotion, the color, and he was able to let these vibrations move freely through his body without stopping them. Similar to Isadora Duncan, the mother of modern dance, my spiritual mother.

Are you an empathic and highly sensitive person?

Do you think something is wrong with your:
Tenderness?
Kindness?
Softness?
Love?
Body feelings?
Emotional Feelings?

Think again. You have the ability to feel everything. Everything that is real on planet earth has vibrations. Empathic people feel reality via these physical vibrations. This means empathic people resonant with the reality around them by using their physical body. Resonating with reality is mighty powerful stuff.

Just think about the sensations and voltage you have available to you. Even Jesus of Galilee could see the future when he said, “The meek shall inherit the earth.” Yep, being empathic is a very strong, resilient, and potent human ability.  There is nothing weak about empaths. They may be meek, but they can move mountains and touch billions.

Just like any other talent, you need to develop your empathic ability and learn how to protect yourself from unpleasant vibrations. It is not hard to learn how to pick and choose when, were, and how much you want to resonate with external realties. You can master your natural talents and abilities so you are effective and powerful.

Learning how to resonate with what you want, instead of what you do not want, can be very beneficial. Then you can choose how you want to use your empathic ability. You can heal others, get rich, and have fun, to name a few possibilities.

Some say it is tragic that Elvis overdosed on drugs. I say, it was magnificent that Elvis was able to find a way to give so much of himself to others. Look at some of the videos of him singing his heart out. You can feel how much he truly enjoyed his vibrant moments of being alive.  Use your natural talents and gifts so you enjoy being alive.

My friend, Lynn Gaertner-Johnson recommends in her new book, Business Writing with Heart, that if you want better relationships with people you need to give them “powerful, positive feedback.” Lynn is addressing the business community, but the same principles apply in your loving relationships.

This means if you want to improve your relationships with your partner and friends, add more “powerful, positive feedback” to your interactions. Do not give some whiny compliment and thank you. No, you need to use enough positive energy to pack a punch and make a difference.

Your feedback needs to shine, glow and radiate so it is felt, received and enjoyed. Your positive feedback can be written, spoken or non-verbal. Some people need words, but non-verbal feedback works just fine for those highly sensitive people in your life. The important factor is the quality and amount of energy that you give to your lover or your new friend.

When you give powerful, positive feedback, you experience a healthy glow from the wonderful energy you have given. After all, it is your heart that is giving. Therefore, your heart reaps the rewards, just as much, if not more, than the other person.

The amount of energy sent from your heart to another’s heart is what strengthens the relationship and makes it more enjoyable. Some of you may be able to feel the heart to heart energy connection between you and others. If so, please tell me about it.

The bottom-line, which I love to call the heart-line, is: We all need positive feedback in order to grow and prosper. Positive feedback is a form of love. However, most of us do not get enough of this precious commodity. Do you sometimes feel love-deprived?

If so, you do not have to continue to be love deprived. Like most things in the real, natural world, there is order to the madness. You have within you the ability and the voltage to start a powerful, positive energy stream in your life. You can get a river of powerful, positive feedback energy started and you can keep it flowing.

If you want more positive feedback from others, give more positive feedback to others. If you want more love, take an honest look at how much love you are dishing out. Are you being stingy with love? Do you feel uncomfortable giving love to others? Many people do.

If you are not getting positive results when you give positive feedback, consider the possibility that the energy you are giving to others is not love. You may think it is love, but it is not love. You could be giving approval, praise or some other pulley, pushy energy.

Be honest with yourself. Take a look and see if your feedback is coming from your brain or your heart. Clean up your feedback so it is truly heart based. You will get positive results when your feedback is pure, clean, and honest.  Love is pure, clean, and honest; approval is not.

Lynn also encourages her readers to be specific when giving powerful, positive feedback. This is an excellent reminder that assertive behavior is specific. When you are being assertive you send a clear and effective message to the other person. The more specific you are, the better.

Therefore, don’t just say, “I like you.” Instead, say, “I like spending time with you because you listen to what I am saying and empathize with me. I feel so much better because I feel heard. Thank you for being my friend.”

Powerful, positive feedback delivered with loving energy from your heart cements your relationships so that they are more intimate. You and your partner develop a genuine sense of closeness based on solid facts you can feel and trust. When you feel close to others, you relax and enjoy being yourself in the moment.
