How many times during the day do you notice:

-When you are tightening up your muscles?
-Your nervous system’s reaction to your environment?
-Where you are inhibiting the flow of energy in your body?

According to Yahoo headline news, Carnie Wilson, a 44-year-old singer, has been “Diagnosed With Bell’s Palsy on Left Side of Face.” Carnie is a member of Wilson Phillips and the daughter of American 1960s pop icon Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.  Bell’s Palsy can result in a form of facial paralysis that is the result of facial muscles drooping due to a nerve not working properly.

The energy that you block, stop or inhibit in your physical body is the primary source of most mental, emotional and physical health problems.  Even if you are not aware of blocking, stopping and inhibiting your energy flow, the physical inhibition will still have a negative effect on all of the systems in your body.

Make a fist with your hand and see what happens to your hand. Look at your fist and see how much healthy, vital energy can get through a closed fist.  Not much.

Anytime you tighten up any part of your human body it affects your nervous system, spinal fluid, blood flow and other bodily functions.  The consequences of inhibiting the energy flowing through your body sets in motion some sort of mental, emotional and physical disease or dysfunction.

On Twitter, Carnie Wilson revealed how she’s coping with her nervous system condition: “PS Who believes in Acupuncture? I’m treating my Bell’s Palsy with it,” she shared on March 14. “It’s working.”

Carnie Wilson is smart.  Acupuncture is not a belief system. At a time when everyone’s eyes are on the future of the Catholic Church, you could use its colorful history to your advantage for personal growth.  For example, let’s take the color green. Why not be charmed by the color green on St. Patrick’s Day, 2013?

St. Patrick gained his claim to fame by bringing Christianity to the United Kingdom.  For the moment, we will forgive him for destroying the culture of the Celts and focus on the positive aspects of this worldwide holiday.

The first official celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in the United States occurred in Morristown, New Jersey in 1780. (This is just across the river from my home in Center City, Philadelphia, the undisputed home of revolutionary causes.)

The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration was authorized by George Washington, America’s first president.  Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by the Irish as well as many other Americans with parades, parties, wearing of green, Irish songs and jigs.  The jigs are my favorite.

Center City, Philadelphia becomes full of lively, green energy beginning early in the morning with the St. Patrick’s Day parade and ending late in the evening with the jigs occurring in the bars and on the streets.  As soon as I wake up, the streets of green are visible from the windows of my home.

The reason people wear green on St. Patrick’s day is to represent the lushness of Ireland, which truly is the Emerald Isle.  So green, especially emerald green, is the color you could get to know more intimately.  Use St. Patty’s Day to expand your physical knowledge of green vibrations and the use color therapy for healing and personal growth.

Pay attention to the physical vibrations of green. Notice the green around you. Wear green, look at green and use green to heal some of your emotional and physical wounds.

Green is a very healing color. I am not going to tell you what green means and is. That is not how I teach color therapy.  You need to get to know green directly without having someone else tell you what green vibrations can do for you.

Wear lots of green this week for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration and notice the concrete, physical effects.  Don’t forget the cabbage and leprechauns!

While snorkeling in Hawaii, out in a big, ocean tide pool, I encountered a giant 150-year-old green sea turtle.  As soon as her large, old, wrinkled neck and huge bobbing head came into clear focus, I grabbed my heart, stopped breathing and gasped.  She was bigger than me.

Hanging still in the water which was connecting us, I paused in wonder and awe.  This ancient sea turtle was resting her head on a large rock and resting her huge body upon the bottom of the sea.  I did not move for a very long time. Being so physically intimate with this powerful creature transformed me.  I will never be the same.

How big is your world?
How much bigger could your universe become?

Some people stay in the little safe pond they were born in and never have the courage to swim a little harder and further in order to reach a bigger pond.

Just think, if you worked hard enough you could reach the bigger pond and maybe even adventure out into the open ocean.  If you did, you would have many great adventures like a close encounter with an ancient sea turtle.

Awareness is the first step in transformation. If you missed last week’s discussion on the importance of body awareness and emotional awareness for good holistic health, read now.

To allow and create a dramatic change in your life, you must be aware of “What is.” What is reality?  What is really going on with you in this moment in time?

“What is” is the first exercise I do at all my workshops.  I begin by increasing your awareness of what is happening in you, around you, between you and what exists outside of you.

The first scan we do is with your physical body. Scan your body now and see if you can increase your awareness of what your physical form is doing in space in this moment.  Start with your feet and work up to the top of your head.

Are your feet spread out wide with relaxed toes?  Feel them, then look and see them.  If you are not barefoot, take off your shoes and look to see what your toes are doing. Really look at your toes for a good long minute. You will get lots of vital information if you pay attention to your toes.  You will be amazed at the information you receive that is intuitive, subtle and correct.

Keep scanning your body. Is your brow wrinkled with thinking?  Are your shoulders relaxing into gravity?

You need to discover:
1.  Which side of your body is more open.
2.  Which muscles are tightening up to block out love energy.
3.  Which part of your body is the most receptive.
4.  The amount of blood flow you allow in your feet, legs and hands.
5.  The amount of anxiety in your nervous system.

New awareness will be yours simply by observing, looking, feeling, sensing and listening.  Once you discover that your toes are all scrummed up and held up in the air with tension, you need to take action to relax those toes and let them fall down into gravity.

See yourself taking effective personal growth actions that are based on your new body awareness.  Visualize yourself having a breakthrough that permanently improves your life. Feel the smile on your face affect your cells in a glorious way and make you feel good all over.

Do you know the health of your heart? If not, it is time for
a thorough heart exam.

Heartaches are real and physical. When you suffer from a
past emotional trauma, the hurt you feel is both physical
and emotional.  A broken heart is indeed broken, damaged
and wounded.

Has it been years since you got divorced? Or did you just
break up with your lover?  Or perhaps you are in the same
relationship and you feel numb, stuck and mundane. Or maybe
you have never been in a loving relationship.

In any case you need to take a heart examination and check
the health of your heart.   Let’s take a look into your
heart and see what is really there.  You can sense the
matter and energy in your heart by putting your
consciousness into your heart and taking a look.

So, put your awareness into your heart.  See if you can
look deep inside of your heart as a physical organ and as
an energy vortex.  How does your heart look, feel, taste,
sound, smell?

If you cannot see clearly deep inside, look around and
see if you can sense what is sitting on top of your heart.
See if you have heaviness, weight, resentment and sadness
barricading your heart.

Then examine the surface of your heart and sense the
physical matter in your chest.

How:
Tight are your muscles?
Sensitive is your chest area?
Open and strong is your chest area?
Closed and weak is your chest area?
Tender are your breasts?

Next, check to see if you can tell how much love energy
is pouring out of your heart.  Then notice how much love
energy is pouring into your heart.

Honestly, most people have closed hearts. Very few have
open hearts. So do not be surprised, upset or judgmental
if your heart is closed or rarely open.

Instead, begin to heal your heartache so that your heart
becomes physically stronger and emotionally healthier.

The New York Times is running a series of articles on
anxiety symptoms, signs of anxiety and anxiety attacks.
One in five Americans admit they suffer from anxiety and
the New York Times is beginning to understand that
“anxiety is not a disorder, it is part of the human
condition.”

Last Sunday in the Times, Alissa Nutting, author of the
short story collection, “Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls‚”
and creative writer teacher at John Carroll University
wrote an article called, “An Appointment with Dread.”

She bravely shares her inner, anxious world.  Picture this.

On the outside, Alissa looks fine. She is sitting in the MD
office waiting to be seen.  The average person would not
know Alissa is feeling anxious because she looks just like
everyone else, and besides, she is pretty.

However, on the inside, Alissa is freaking out.

Alissa describes how she feels as she walks down the hall to
the medical examining office. “Although this feels like an
emergency, when we pass a fire extinguisher, I do not break
the glass. I would like to, though. I would like to activate
an alarm and run.”

How often do you feel like something is an emergency and
you know it is not a real emergency?  This feeling of urgency
and anxiety IS part of the human condition.

For example, are you the kind of person who has to jump up
and do something as soon as you think about it?  Your sense
of emergency forces you to complete a task as soon as you
think about the need to complete a task.

You have trouble relaxing, resting, and being in the moment.
You do not trust that you will complete all tasks as needed,
when needed.

This urgency that something is an emergency when it is not,
is very important to tease out, address and unlearn.

As a child, you learned to be anxious about all sorts of
things.  As you grew up, many of your anxious behaviors
became very unhelpful and ineffective.

As an adult, you have trouble relaxing, resting and being in
the moment.  Anxiety is the reason you do not have more
vibrant moments of being alive, happy and full of yourself.

Begin to recognize your sense of urgency, which is your
anxiety.  Then address the real issue.

Do not follow in Alissa’s footsteps of getting more medication
from physicians to mask the psychological problems that you
have.  Instead, address your real mental health, emotional
health and sexual health problems.

You need to unlearn all the behaviors that push you to do
something right now, in a certain and just so. Your pushy
behaviors are anxious behaviors. They are keeping you from
relaxing, being healthy, making love and enjoying life.

Holistic Health Professionals:  Are you in the process of
unlearning your anxious behaviors from the past?  If not,
your anxiety is coloring your world and blocking your personal
growth.  Your anxious behaviors are also stopping you from
being more successful with your clients who have anxiety

Falling in Love, Relationship Advice: Use Body Language to Notice Fear, Anxiety

A reporter sent me a series of questions to answer on the
physical effects of falling in and out of love for an article
she was writing.

One of her questions was, “What exactly causes the
“butterflies” and “sweaty palms” when people fall in love?
Is that real or not?”

My answer:

“Yes, these physical experiences are real. Your body reacts
to everything that is going on inside and outside of you all
the time. Your body is the best barometer you have for knowing
what is really happening in physical reality.”

For example, “butterflies” and “sweaty palms” occur when you
are anxious.  These physical effects often happen to you before
you give a speech, when you are in a new situation, when you are
in an airplane and so on.

What you need to know is the feeling of love is not causing your
physical reactions of anxiety.  It is most important to sort out
the difference between love and the fear of love.

It is your fear of love that causes you to have butterflies in
your stomach.

Your fears of intimacy cause you to experience sweaty palms.
You may feel insecure about the possibility of falling in love.
Perhaps you are afraid of being vulnerable and open.

You are thinking thoughts like this:
“Does she like me as much as I like her?”
“Oh no! I will get hurt if I fall in love.”
“I can’t let him know how much I like him. He will run away.”

When you are in love your body reacts very differently.

You are feeling love and not thinking anything. Your body is
relaxed, open and soft when it is in the energy of love.

Real love makes you feel secure, accepted and calm. You are glad
to have a person to love and be loved by.

If you are afraid of love, now is the time to learn how to face
your fears and overcome your anxiety.   It will be good for your
mental health, emotional health and physical health to learn how
to spend more time in the physical state of love.

PROFESSIONALS:  If you are not using body awareness and its
physical truths in your work, you are not using the most powerful
tools you have to help your clients transform their fear and anxiety
energy into love energy.  Engage in continuing education to learn
how to include the body and its truths in your psychological work.

PARENTS:  Make sure you get back in your own body so you can model
healthy loving behaviors for your children instead of anxious,
fearful behaviors.  Help your children keep their body self-esteem
as they grow up by allowing them to play freely with their whole
body and spend lots of time outdoors every day.

When was the last time you dressed up for Halloween?

Halloween is a great time to have fun and do some serious
personal growth.

For example, what part of you do you ignore, deny or reject?

Do you pay attention to your needy part?  Do you acknowledge
your greedy part?  Do you accept the bossy part?  What about
your spoiled brat?

Halloween is a great time to embrace and love the parts of
the self that you have trouble accepting.

Self-love is a delicious and life empowering human energy.
With genuine self-love you have everything you need to
weather any storm.

The year I dressed up as a spoiled brat was life changing.
I wore cute little shorts, a boy’s cap and red suspenders.
I stuck my nose up in the air and pranced around all night
at the Halloween party I hosted.

I did not behave the way a good girl is supposed to behave.
What fun!  I finally freed myself from my own judgmental
chains.  My liberation occurred because I gave myself the
freedom to be a spoiled brat.

By “owning” my spoiled brat, I realized I did not have to be
so perfect, so good or so loving all the time with everyone.
I did not have to be “perfect” to be acceptable and lovable.

Give it a try.

Even if you do not go to a Halloween party or stroll around
your neighborhood, dress up as the part of you that you need
to embrace in order to cultivate more self-love.

As you “own” the part of you that you are currently rejecting,
you go through a natural process of personal growth and self
improvement.

If you let go of control, your natural process will unfold.

You will enjoy creating your costume.  Your creative self will
have fun planning and gathering the items. Your costume will
manifest from what you already have in your closet and you
will use old sheets, paper and odd items.

The part of you who needs to be loved will lead the way.
Your costume will change and rearrange along the way as your
energy becomes freer and healthier.

Self-improvement does not have to be boring or painful, it can
be great and glorious fun.  Dressing up as Carmen or Napoleon
may be just what you need.

Is your child or niece going off to college?
Do you stay awake at night worrying?

A research study with Stanford University students
found that 95% of the thoughts college students have
are negative thoughts about themselves.

The negative thoughts you have about yourself tend to
repeat over and over again. These negative thoughts
can recur during your waking state and in your dreams.

Yes, notice how often you dream the same dream with
the same theme.  And of course, these same thoughts
are the ones that keep you awake at night so that
you cannot sleep with ease.

Your brain is amazing.  It loves to think.  And if
you are a bit anxious it can go wild against itself.
Your brain can drive you crazy by thinking the same
thought over and over again.

Thinking the same thought more than three times is
called obsessive thinking.  Obsessive thinking will
keep your young college student from being able to
concentrate and study effectively for his first test.

Your niece could drop out of college due to her
obsessive thinking. Does she know how to study
effectively? Does she know how to get help with her
obsessive thinking and anxiety?

You need to learn effective ways to tame your
thoughts and keep them from ruining your sleep,
lunch and fun.  Then you can help your child or niece
learn how to study, concentrate and be effective with
their thinking.

I stay away from mental approaches; they keep your
mind far too active.  Instead, I use body approaches.
Increase your body awareness and body use.

Body approaches are powerful weapons against out of
control, obsessive thinking.  If you learn, develop and
use body approaches you will tame your thoughts.

For Parents:  Make sure your college student is
prepared and ready for his or her first semester.
Help him learn effective study skills so he has time
for fun and friends. Talk with him about negative,
obsessive thinking and tell him to get help before he
gets an upset stomach or drops out.

For Professionals: Tame your own thoughts so you can
help your clients tame theirs.  Obsessive thinking is a
sign of anxiety. The way to solve obsessive thinking is
to reduce your anxiety and teach your client’s how to
reduce their anxiety. Use body approaches.
