Do you judge your mistakes?

I never knew Memphis, Tennessee, USA was such a musical, interesting and exciting place. Last week I wrote about Memphis as the birthplace of the Blues: https://thevibrantmoment.com/?p=869

Well, did you know that Memphis is also the birthplace of rock and roll? It appears that when black music truly met white music as an equal, there was a rock and a roll! This meeting of the two cultures occurred in the Mississippi Delta.

In 1951, the very first recording of rock and roll was created in Sun Studio in Memphis. There is a plaque on the building making it official from the US government designating Sun Studio as a National Historic Landmark. Sam Phillips was a white man looking for a new sound, any new sound to record in his new recording studio.

Up comes Ike Turner’s band (yes the same Ike who later married Tina Turner) on their way to Sun Studio. The band’s car broke down and their amp fell out and broke. Using a newspaper to stuff the amp back together, they reached the studio.

Sam recorded the band playing and singing, “Rocket 88.” Featuring Jackie Brenston on lead vocals and the newspaper-repaired amp, the first rock and roll record was created on that fateful day in Sun Studio.

The band’s car accident probably helped them break loose and sing more freely. The paper distorted the music just enough to make it interesting to Sam. And the world had a new music to rock and roll their body to.

What can you learn from this?

Welcome mistakes and accidents. Take advantage of the unexpected. Creativity is a wonderful, existing, fun experience. Add some new sounds and new body movements to your life today.

Cook something new tonight for dinner.
Walk a different path to work.
Drive a different road to your friend’s house.
Plan a new adventure for an upcoming holiday.
Sit down and do nothing.

Break loose from your rigidity, routines and habits. Do something differently than you ever have before. Being creative will give you a vibrant moment or two to enjoy.

Sitting in the Memphis airport catching up on my email while listening to sounds of the Blues being piped throughout the Memphis airport. For those of you outside of USA, Memphis is on the Mississippi River in western Tennessee and is the birthplace of the Blues.

B.B. King, an African-American, is considered to be the King of the Blues. He performed his soulful sounds right here on Beale Street in downtown Memphis. He is 88 years old as of 2013. The Blues are a colorful expression of emotions put to music which grew out of the hard life on the Mississippi Delta.

I have been recommending color therapy and music therapy to my clients for over 30 years. For example, listening to the Blues can help you heal your heart and connect with your soul. If you allow yourself to feel the vibrations in the Blues, these vibrations provide you with a safe, effective form of color therapy and music therapy.

What can listening to the Blues do for you?

The results of listening to the Blues when you feel down and out gives you psychological benefits far beyond what most traditional talk therapy can do for you. The vibrations in music affect your physical body and your emotional body.

Sound vibrations affect your physical body. Color vibrations affect your emotional body. Therefore, listening to music helps you connect with your authentic emotions. The more you feel your authentic emotions, the more effectively you move through difficult periods in your life.

If you let yourself feel your sad feelings when you feel sad, you do not get stuck in depression. Instead, you move forward through your pain, loss and sorrow until you reach the state where you feel more alive, rich and deep. The Blues help you feel your authentic emotions, which helps you move forward.

As a result, you begin to live life more fully than you did before your loss, pain or sorrow. Listening to music is helpful but certainly not enough. If you keep moving forward by engaging in effective personal growth actions, you get to the emotionally healthy place where you don’t even experience the Blues very often anymore.

I like to listen to the African-American women sing the Blues. Ma Rainey is considered to be the Mother of the Blues. Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter and Ethel Waters are just as worthy of your attention. Of course, many of the current performers render their wonderful original tunes with heartfelt emotion.

My all time favorite Blues song is Ida Cox’s “Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues.” If you have never heard it, give it a spin. Whether you are a man or woman, you need to be free, wild and happy without needing external approval from someone else.

Feel the vibrations in the Blues and let your body move. Soon you will feel better, stronger and more alive.

==========================

How often do you say thank you?
Do you ever behave or feel above it all?

Lately, I have noticed that I sometimes forget to give thanks after asking for something and receiving it. I get so happy and excited about getting what I asked for, I forget to send the energy of thank you back to the person or energy that gave me the gift. Forgetting to say thank you is not helpful to me.

So let me say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the wonderful people who sent me positive feedback about last week’s newsletter on the importance and power of being authentic. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Here is a link to the newsletter if you have not read it: https://thevibrantmoment.com/2013/10/16/personal-growth-tip-relax-be-authentic-and-assertive/

Being a highly non-verbal person it has always been hard for me to write and hit send. Therefore, it is extremely helpful to me to get your feedback about how my message is coming across to you. Even if the feedback is how I need to improve something or if I made a mistake, I really appreciate hearing from you.

Having spent years studying the physics and metaphysics of, “Ask and you will receive,” I am finally beginning to “get it!” As a result, I have been enjoying much more success in receiving what I ask for in the last two years. Part of my current success comes from looking back on my 36 years of practice as a psychologist to see when, where and how I got off track.

Early in my career, I had a waiting list of clients, more money than I ever imagined and people recognizing me in restaurants. Once a man stopped me on Walnut Street and wanted to ask me about something I had written in a local magazine. I just kept walking, impatiently brushing him off.

At the time, I did not know I was pushing success away when I was pushing him away. My arrogance toward him is hard to see in myself and hard to admit to you. However, as I am always teaching you, admitting the truth is extremely liberating and empowering.

After many years of observing my behaviors and consciousness, I have noticed definite patterns of success in my life. Learning from my mistakes, I am sure the next time someone recognizes me and wants to talk, I will be more gracious, respectful and grateful. I will say thank you to the person and mean it from the bottom of my heart.

Pay attention to what you do when you receive what you want and need. When you do not say thank you and mean it, you stop the flow of energy coming toward you. Give thanks to get more, and mean it from the bottom of your heart.

==========================

Do you know the difference between your learned behavior and your authentic behavior?

As a lowly human being, you must learn a great deal of information to survive on planet Earth. You have to use your learned behavior many times a day in order to get through your necessary chores and routines. Otherwise, society could reject you, imprison you and declare you insane.

Unfortunately, your high degree of learned behavior also means you are easy to control. For example, yesterday I had to stand in a long line at a pharmacy and once I got to the counter, I was told I had to sit down and wait for my name to be called and get back in the long line.

Do you wait in long lines at the bank or post office? Do you pay a lot of money to physicians and hospitals without questioning the health advice they give you and how they treat you? Do you let therapists and partners define you?

I did not sit down when I was told to sit down. I walked around the store feeling what I really wanted to do. Given the reality of the situation, I decided I was not going to wait any longer. So, I walked up to the man who told me to sit down and asked him for other options. After considering each one, one of them was better than waiting. Therefore, I told him I would come back after they called me to tell me everything was ready.

If you follow instructions without considering what your authentic self needs and wants, you are controlled. When you are controlled, you become weak and sick and miserable. As a holistic psychologist, I know the source problem of anxiety, depression and other mental illness is from years of not turning to your authentic self for healthy, effective answers and solutions.

The reason you do not listen to your authentic self is because your parents taught you to be scared of so many things that are not really scary or dangerous. This is the definition of anxiety. Anxiety is being scared of things that are not really scary or dangerous. Real fear is when you are afraid of things that are really dangerous.

Anxiety is nothing weird or unusual. It is learned behavior that is maladaptive. Maladaptive means that it hurts you and does not help you. Anxiety keeps you from being self-confident, physically healthy and emotionally happy.

Your parents taught you to be scared of many, many things, people and situations that are not really dangerous or scary. It is not dangerous to stop waiting in long lines or reject the health advice of a physician or say no to your partner. As a matter of fact, you will be respected and valued much more when you are authentic because you are strong, self-confidence and sturdy.

Thank goodness you can unlearn any learned behavior that is not helpful for you. You are not stuck with your conditioning forever and ever. You can learn how to turn to your authentic self for vital energy, strength and courage any time of the day in any situation. Then your ineffective behaviors will become effective and powerful.

You just need to know the difference between what you learned and who you are so you can move rapidly toward holistic health and enjoy lots more vibrant moments. Otherwise you are confused, controlled and stuck.

Please share your comments about relaxing and being yourself below.

==========================

I just went to a funeral and had one of the best times I have had in my life with old and new friends. Amazing but true.

You have probably heard about the death celebrations, often attributed to the Native cultures, where the people left behind enjoy themselves instead of feeling so sad and blue. Most of us have never had a joyful death celebration. Well, I just did.

This funeral was a true celebration of our dear friend, Fran. She left behind a variety of interesting friends and beloved family who came together to say goodbye to her. Many of us cried and felt sad during the church service when we heard the beautiful music.

After the short and meaningful service, we walked outside into the bright sunlight and streets of Philadelphia. Her family had planned a fantastic sit down meal right next door to the church at a Center City Italian restaurant. This meant that we could all be together sitting around big round tables in comfort and style.

We spent two leisurely hours laughing, eating, drinking and sharing stories. It was a grand and glorious way to celebrate Fran’s death, life and spirit. We felt nourished, loved and grateful.

Let death be a true celebration of life, your life.

You are only here for a very short period of time. Yep, you don’t have that much time to be in the flesh. When someone you know dies, let it be a reminder that you need to live more fully.

I am talking to myself as much as to you. I just about did not go to this event today. Tuesday is my day to spend at least two hours writing this newsletter after my morning clients and before an afternoon tele-class. Wow, I am so glad I did not resist this event and let my “shoulds” dictate my day.

Ponder your life and choices.

Could it be that you need to spend some of your money on yourself and your desires and dreams? Do you need to take the time to relax in the middle of the day and do nothing? Do you need to stop everything and just be in the moment and sip your water while listening to a person you have never known before?

Being in the moment is the only way you can truly enjoy your life. Being in your head thinking about the future or the past does not satisfy the soul. Your soul needs to be nourished, fed and respected. Take time to listen to what your soul needs today and make sure you deliver the goods before you let a week go by.

Honor both life and death as they occur. Feel the experience in your body, heart and soul. Otherwise, your time on Earth will be over and you will have missed the reason you were born.

What do you do for fun?
How often do you let go and play?

This free holistic psychology newsletter exists to show you how to have more vibrant moments.  Vibrant moments are when you stop thinking and drop down into physical reality. This means you get out of the mental thoughts in your head and directly experience the physical energy that exists inside and outside of your body.

Physical reality includes the:
1.  Field of gravity that keeps you safe and sound on planet earth.
2.  Trees that inhale your carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen for you to breathe.
3;  Space where all the other animals and insects breed, play and die.
4.  Ocean and sky.
5.  Body that you sit, walk and sleep in.

Mental Health Definition

The degree to which you are in physical reality is the degree to which you are mentally healthy.  The degree to which you live in your own, isolated mental thoughts is the degree to which you have some sort of so-called mental illness. This could be a small case of obsessive thinking, a need to be perfect or a huge case of psychosis.

A Fun Exercise

Letting yourself have more fun this week could help you enjoy more vibrant moments.  Having more vibrant moments improves your holistic and mental health. The idea is to trick yourself into letting go of control by paying attention to some physical activity that you really enjoy doing.

Also, make sure you do not continue to do the activity past the point where it is fun. Your sneaky ego often controls you by turning your fun activity into work!

So write down three physical activities that are fun for you. Nothing that feels like work or exercise, just fun. Then do the one that is easiest and most convenient.  Or if you have time and it is possible, do all three!

For example, I love to swim, dance and do artwork. My outdoor swimming pool just closed so I cannot swim a half a block around the corner anymore until next spring. Therefore, I have to find another fun activity to do or another place to swim. I could go dancing with some friends or I could dance in my own living room.

Since the weather is so glorious here in Philadelphia, I could go to the beach and swim in the ocean.  Ah, and there is that wet clay in my backyard that has been waiting and waiting for someone to pay attention to it. I could treat myself to putting my hands in the clay and have a great deal of fun expressing my soul’s desire.

Pick at least one fun physical experience and give yourself the free time to relax and enjoy doing it.  See if per chance you stop thinking and drop down into your physical energy.  If you do, take notice and return to this vibrant moment again and again.

==========================

Do you know your Shadow?
Do you keep your Shadow hidden from others?

One of the most effective benefits of psychoanalysis is the process of uncovering the dark, unhealthy energy in your unconscious.  Carl Jung called these parts of the self that you placed in your unconscious The Shadow.

Here is what Carl Jung wrote about The Shadow, “Unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually subjected to modifications. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected.”

“Psychology and Religion” (1938). In CW 11: Psychology and Religion: West and East. P.131

What this means is that if you are not aware of your so called bad habits, bad thoughts, bad behaviors, bad feelings, bad emotions you are sure to be really, really bad and continue to be bad.  You are hiding the fact that you are bad and the hiding of your “lack of goodness” makes you weak, mean, irrational and sick.

On the outside you are projecting goodness, but this goodness is not real.  As long as you keep your badness in the dark, you do not have a chance to transform your dark energy into light.  Instead, you are darker and denser than those of us who bring up this material to the light of the conscious mind.

Only those of us who bring up and admit we are not so good or so perfect have a chance to improve ourselves. Only when you admit you have thoughts that are judgmental, can you stop being judgmental toward yourself and toward others.

Personal growth, which leads to more self-confidence, is successful when you admit, know and own your Shadow.  It is to your benefit to know your shadow by admitting the truth that dwells deep inside of you.

Your dark, dense energy is dying to be exposed and set free so you can be relaxed, authentic and happy.

==========================

Does your Inner Critic still have the upper hand?
Do you let your brain tell you what you should and should not do?

In 2005, a published writer and teacher listened to my tele-seminar, “De-fang Your Inner Critic to Find Your Voice.”  During this holistic psychology tele-seminar, I interviewed my dear friend Emily Hanlon, author of the best-selling book, Petersburg.  Yesterday, the published writer shared this story with me in an e-mail.

“I still remember that call, and I use it for myself and when talking to other writers. I have two thirteen-year old cousins who are writers, and we have our own mini-retreats. Yes, that is a pure joy for me. 🙂 Your approach to the Inner Critic is SO good for them in writing and in life. I wish I’d had that at their age.”

What is so wonderful about this feedback is that it proves you can learn to stand up to your Inner Critic.  It also proves that once you know how to stand up to your Inner Critic, you can teach others to do the same.

So many people, especially parents, do not even know they are being controlled by their Inner Critic.  They go through life automatically listening, following and obeying the negative thoughts in their head.  Consequently, they teach their children to obey the should and should nots that have been handled down for centuries by rigid, controlling, unconscious thought patterns.

This is the reason the brilliant philosopher Nietzsche talked about the herd mentality of humankind.  The masses are controlled by their rigid, controlling thought patterns.  Millions of people are stuck in this mass consciousness, which Nietzsche called the herd.  The herd mentality follows false beliefs and negative conditioning without breaking free from the chains that have them locked in the dark prison of their own unconscious.

Everyone on the planet has an Inner Critic. This is a given.  Your Inner Critic is located in your brain and is fueled by judgmental thoughts. The judgmental thoughts that your Inner Critic spews out on you and others are learned from outside sources. The results of letting your Inner Critic dominate your personality are relationship problems, emotional distress, depression, anxiety, mental health problems and physical disease.

If you cannot recognize the voice of your Inner Critic in your own head, the first thing you need to do is expose its nasty comments to your conscious mind.  You need to know when your Inner Critic is talking to you or you will always be controlled by its judgmental energy.  Your left brain is very clever and often a bully.  Therefore, your Inner Critic has the power to confuse you, fool you and even reverse reality on you.

After you learn to recognize the voice of your Inner Critic, then you must learn the assertiveness skills needed to stand up to its constant fault finding.  Once you become strong enough, smart enough and willing enough to stand up to your Inner Critic, you break free from its irrational thoughts, find your authentic voice and walk your truth.

If you love to listen to audio, catch some of my 30 minute radio shows on Live at the Edge, free Internet radio. In the library are interviews with famous people like the transpersonal psychologist Dr. Charles Tart and the quantum physicist Dr. Amit Goswami.  Fascinating interviews with spiritual teachers Chris Chrisom, Laura Kamm and Lynn Andrews educate you about the subtle energies that surround you.

Interested in anxiety, depression and the process of transformation?  Listen to some of my solo shows where I share my new holistic psychology approach.  Suffering with emotional distress is not necessary.  These short audio radio shows educate you about real solutions to real problems.  You can even listen to a sample holistic psychology session with a woman who is getting a divorce.

Do you have goosebumps everyday? Many of the Live at the Edge radio shows are so exciting and enjoyable you could allow yourself to experience goosebumps right along with me!  My dear friend Harold Mesibov was a student of Dr. Barnes in Philadelphia when he was collecting his masterpieces from Picasso, Renoir and Matisse. My Live at the Edge interview with Harold turns into an inspiring, creative, art piece.

Not sure how much longer the Live at the Edge shows will be available on newvoices.com because my producer Georgia Jones is passing over. The Live at the Edge audio will be available until the end of the year at http://www.ladybuglive.com/edge.htm

I need help publishing my international Heart to Heart Columns, which were originally published by an English psychologist living in France. If you have editing skills and the time to work on a book project, please email me and let me know.

I am blessed to be hanging out with my mother this week as she turns 85.  Speaking of blessings, notice how often you bless something.  Then, notice how often you curse something.

You want to bless more things than you curse if you want to manifest positive energy in your life.

Thank you for all the interesting questions and positive feedback about The Vibrant Moment articles on whining, feeling sorry for yourself and the sneaky way your ego blocks your healthy emotional expression.

You can apply the same psychological dynamics to other behaviors such as talking too much, not sharing enough about yourself, being impatient and listening with your mind instead of your heart. You can use the same awareness of psychological processes with any other unpleasant relationship behavior you may be afraid that you engage in.

For those of you who missed last week’s information on the Definition of Whining and the Definition of Healthy Emotional Expression catch it here:
https://thevibrantmoment.com/2013/08/21/personal-growth-tip-expose-self-pity-to-find-effective-behaviors/

Several of you mentioned that you are concerned when others tune you out or run away from you with their hands over their ears!  In other words, the other person does not want to hear what you are saying. You may be whining or you may be expressing your authentic emotions. It does not matter. This is when you need to use other people’s feedback to your advantage.

A very important relationship skill is the ability to pick up other people’s nonverbal and verbal clues.  So if someone tunes you out, stop talking. It does not matter if you are whining or expressing your emotions, if others do not want to hear you, stop talking. To continue to talk would not be fruitful.

You can discover if the block in communication is you or them by noticing your own behavior.  Remember, if you really are whining, there is a high probability you do not know that you are whining.  This means this unhelpful behavior is in your unconscious.

To be more intimate with others, you need someone to tell you when you are whining.  When others tune you out, this is a helpful indication to you that you may be whining or engaging in some other ineffective relationship behavior. This is not always true but it could be true.

It is up to you to find the proper place to expose your whining and get the help you need in transforming this ineffective relationship behavior into an assertive behavior.  Coaching, mentoring and therapeutic relationships were created to help you with all your ineffective relationship behaviors.

A good holistic psychologist does not reinforce your whining behavior by sitting there and listening to you feel sorry for yourself.  Nor does she react with judgment or discomfort. She is comfortable with your whining because she has learned to notice, accept and deal with her own whining.

Therefore, she gently helps you become aware of your whining, in an emotionally safe and nonjudgmental manner.  With kindness she teaches you how to stop judging yourself about the fact that you feel sorry for yourself. Next, she teaches you effective assertive behaviors that allow you to be closer to yourself and to others.

Let us come full circle back to the beginning example of how your ego tells you are whining when you are not whining. For those of you who missed it: https://thevibrantmoment.com/2013/08/14/assertiveness-moves-beyond-talk-therapy-into-nature-energy-and-power/

When you say to yourself, “You are whining and you must immediately stop whining,” there is a high probability that you are blocking your own authentic emotional expression. The other person is not tuning you out, you are inhibiting yourself. You learned to do this when you were a child.

When you pay attention to the emotional energy dynamics you discover the deeper psychological truth. The irony, the twist of reality, the truth is that you are inhibiting your healthy emotional expression when you accuse yourself of whining.

To transform this behavior, tame your sneaky critical ego and stop her from raining on your parade.  Learn to stand up to your Ms. Perfect and find healthy ways to express your authentic emotions. The presence of other people is not necessary.

Please post your feelings, thoughts and comments about self-awareness, emotional expression, personal growth and assertiveness below.
