We have a U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson, to thank for raising the consciousness of Americans about their relationship to Mother Earth.  Gaylord’s continued environmental efforts finally paid off in 1970, when his nationwide protest called National Earth Day, received amazing support.  An estimated 20 million people took to the streets and parks willing to stand up for Mother Earth.

Since I grew up on a self-sustaining, 300 acre farm in North Carolina, I was not aware that so many Americans were disconnected from nature. Therefore, I did not realize how important Earth Day was until five years later when I ended up in Center City, Philadelphia surrounded by anxious people rushing to and from work every day.

The anxious people that came to my office to receive Relaxation Therapy and Assertiveness Training slowed down. I taught men and women how to stop rushing to and from their work so their blood pressure could return to normal. The clients who received the most positive results, were the ones who learned to relax their physical body and feel their emotional feelings.

The more I researched what worked and what did not work in terms of anxiety, depression and other mental health problems, the more I realized how disconnected most humans were from their own physical body. Everyone was in their head, thinking.

Therefore, my goal as a clinical psychologist and sex therapist became clear:  getting people out of their heads into their body.  That was when my new holistic psychology approach began to really take off.  I began to work in nature, exploring more effective ways of helping people.  I did my first Nature Workshop in 1984.

It is a fact that people are more relaxed in nature. The only exception is someone with a history of abuse that is associated with nature.  Forest, river or beach scenes are always picked as relaxing, by both men and women.  I began to understand how essential a physical connection to Mother Earth is for humans.

Some traditional psychologists understand that it is unhealthy for a child to be disconnected physically from his mother.  This is called “Attachment.” Without a healthy attachment to your mother, you cannot grow into an emotionally mature person who can connect and be close to other people.  Without a healthy attachment to some loving adult, you have trouble with relationships, intimacy, love making and self-esteem.

Therefore, I can say, with absolute certainty, that any type of mental health problem is the direct result of being disconnected.  To feel emotionally secure, you must have a physical connection with your human mother or some other loving person.  To feel physically secure, you must have a physical connection to Mother Earth.

Being disconnected causes mental, emotional and physical health problems.  An attachment problem can be overcome by learning how to connect with Mother Earth.  Holistic health can be achieved as an adult–no matter what was lacking in your past learning history.

What does your voice say about you?

Do you listen to other people’s voice for information?
Do you listen to your own voice for feedback?

The power of sound starts early in life. Babies can recognize their mother’s voice in the womb. Canadian and Chinese researchers documented this bit of data in 2003 with a publication in Psychological Science. This means you recognize the voice of people you know without even thinking about it.

The exciting news is that you can also learn to read the data and information that is in the voice moment by moment.  Just think of the knowledge and wisdom you would have if you took the time to listen to the tones in the sounds of the voice.  You would know a great deal about what is really going on with yourself and with others.

Yesterday, while I was working on my income taxes, I received a call from a woman asking if I was accepting new clients. She had very flat tones in her voice and many of the pitches were missing.  The few pitches that she had in her voice were very heavy and dark.

As soon as I heard her voice, I knew that depression was her major problem.  I immediately sensed the depth of her depression and how heavy her body energy was from the vibrations in her voice. The sounds in her voice helped me guide her into the important issues in her life right away so that we did not waste time on surface, superficial conversation.

How many times during the day do you notice:

-When you are tightening up your muscles?
-Your nervous system’s reaction to your environment?
-Where you are inhibiting the flow of energy in your body?

According to Yahoo headline news, Carnie Wilson, a 44-year-old singer, has been “Diagnosed With Bell’s Palsy on Left Side of Face.” Carnie is a member of Wilson Phillips and the daughter of American 1960s pop icon Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.  Bell’s Palsy can result in a form of facial paralysis that is the result of facial muscles drooping due to a nerve not working properly.

The energy that you block, stop or inhibit in your physical body is the primary source of most mental, emotional and physical health problems.  Even if you are not aware of blocking, stopping and inhibiting your energy flow, the physical inhibition will still have a negative effect on all of the systems in your body.

Make a fist with your hand and see what happens to your hand. Look at your fist and see how much healthy, vital energy can get through a closed fist.  Not much.

Anytime you tighten up any part of your human body it affects your nervous system, spinal fluid, blood flow and other bodily functions.  The consequences of inhibiting the energy flowing through your body sets in motion some sort of mental, emotional and physical disease or dysfunction.

On Twitter, Carnie Wilson revealed how she’s coping with her nervous system condition: “PS Who believes in Acupuncture? I’m treating my Bell’s Palsy with it,” she shared on March 14. “It’s working.”

Carnie Wilson is smart.  Acupuncture is not a belief system. At a time when everyone’s eyes are on the future of the Catholic Church, you could use its colorful history to your advantage for personal growth.  For example, let’s take the color green. Why not be charmed by the color green on St. Patrick’s Day, 2013?

St. Patrick gained his claim to fame by bringing Christianity to the United Kingdom.  For the moment, we will forgive him for destroying the culture of the Celts and focus on the positive aspects of this worldwide holiday.

The first official celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in the United States occurred in Morristown, New Jersey in 1780. (This is just across the river from my home in Center City, Philadelphia, the undisputed home of revolutionary causes.)

The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration was authorized by George Washington, America’s first president.  Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by the Irish as well as many other Americans with parades, parties, wearing of green, Irish songs and jigs.  The jigs are my favorite.

Center City, Philadelphia becomes full of lively, green energy beginning early in the morning with the St. Patrick’s Day parade and ending late in the evening with the jigs occurring in the bars and on the streets.  As soon as I wake up, the streets of green are visible from the windows of my home.

The reason people wear green on St. Patrick’s day is to represent the lushness of Ireland, which truly is the Emerald Isle.  So green, especially emerald green, is the color you could get to know more intimately.  Use St. Patty’s Day to expand your physical knowledge of green vibrations and the use color therapy for healing and personal growth.

Pay attention to the physical vibrations of green. Notice the green around you. Wear green, look at green and use green to heal some of your emotional and physical wounds.

Green is a very healing color. I am not going to tell you what green means and is. That is not how I teach color therapy.  You need to get to know green directly without having someone else tell you what green vibrations can do for you.

Wear lots of green this week for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration and notice the concrete, physical effects.  Don’t forget the cabbage and leprechauns!

International Women’s Day is Friday, March 8.

International Women’s Day is a helpful reminder to all of us that we need to love our feminine energy.  Currently, female energy is not loved, praised or valued on planet Earth.  Instead, women are paid less, treated as sex objects and often called crazy.

As a holistic psychologist, I relate to each person as a whole full-boded human energy system.  This means that no matter your gender, you have a combination of both male and female energy.  In the physical world, there is no yin without yang. Both are required to create a whole person.

For example, notice how the electricity in your house works. You would not have any juice to use for your computer if there were only male or female energy flowing in your wires.  There would be no spark, no charge, nothing would happen.

You must have both male and female currents working together in total cooperation to create the power you need for everyday living.  A male plug must connect in perfect harmony with a female plug.

Apply this to yourself.  You need both your female and male energy working together peacefully if you want to be healthy, happy and effective.

Therefore, you need to love your feminine nature as much as you love your masculine nature.  What are the qualities of feminine energy?

Feminine energy is:

Receptive
Nurturing
Nourishing
Emotional
Empathic
Loving
Creative

For starters, take the first quality of being more receptive.  See if you can directly sense and feel the power of your feminine energy.  People who are highly successful are very magnetic.  A magnet receives energy.

Take a few minutes and see how much positive energy you can receive.  Think of some recent praise, love or good fortune. Imagine this positive energy coming toward you.

Pay close attention to what you think or say to yourself.  Notice if you discount the compliment or achievement in anyway.  If so, your mental judgment will block and stop your receptivity.

Relaxation is the optimum state of the organism.

Dr. Joe Wolpe, the father of Behavior Therapy, first introduced me to this physical reality back in 1975.  The physical evidence to support this basic psychological principle is quite clear and cannot be denied by the human brain. This is one of the reasons I base my original, holistic psychology approach on body awareness and physics.

For example, consider the amazing statistic that people who are drunk miraculously survive car accidents at a much higher degree than those in the same car who are not drunk. The anti-anxiety drug qualities of alcohol explains the reason drunk people get hurt less in car accidents than those who have a tight, tense and anxious body.

Out of all the drugs available on the legal and illegal markets, alcohol is by and far the very best and safest anti-anxiety drug available to humankind.  Alcohol relaxes the physical body and helps reduce your anxiety for the period of time that alcohol is in your system without the serious side effects of psychiatric medications.

While wine and beer are excellent at shutting up your inner critic so your body can relax, it is not wise to use any medication or drug as relaxation therapy.  Instead, you need to learn how to relax your body with your own awareness if you want to reach the optimal state of relaxation.

Relaxation is not a drugged state.  When you are drugged, you are physically slower, mentally muddled and out of touch with your surroundings. You mess up your performance, you do not improve it.  You may survive car accidents because your body is relaxed but if you are the driver you could also be the reason the car is out of control in the first place.

So forget drugs or medications of any sort and choose relaxation therapy.  With successful relaxation therapy you can learn how to relax your body so you perform at your peak.  When you are relaxed, your body is able to handle a much higher degree of stress, trauma, fear and anxiety without damage.

In addition, in the relaxed state, your body will operate at its maximum without thinking.  Look at the performance of basketball players. Once they start thinking, they cannot even sink their free throws. This is because getting in their head ruins their physical performance.  On the other hand, when basketball players are relaxed, they get in the flow and nothing can stop their balls from dropping into the basket.

Peak performance will also happen to you when you relax and get in your flow.  You may want to improve your performance at lovemaking, cooking, swimming, administrating or making money.  In all cases, the more you relax, the better your performance will be.

While snorkeling in Hawaii, out in a big, ocean tide pool, I encountered a giant 150-year-old green sea turtle.  As soon as her large, old, wrinkled neck and huge bobbing head came into clear focus, I grabbed my heart, stopped breathing and gasped.  She was bigger than me.

Hanging still in the water which was connecting us, I paused in wonder and awe.  This ancient sea turtle was resting her head on a large rock and resting her huge body upon the bottom of the sea.  I did not move for a very long time. Being so physically intimate with this powerful creature transformed me.  I will never be the same.

How big is your world?
How much bigger could your universe become?

Some people stay in the little safe pond they were born in and never have the courage to swim a little harder and further in order to reach a bigger pond.

Just think, if you worked hard enough you could reach the bigger pond and maybe even adventure out into the open ocean.  If you did, you would have many great adventures like a close encounter with an ancient sea turtle.

Of course, it takes a certain amount of time, energy and effort to become strong enough to swim a current that might be pushing you back to the smaller pond.  However, if you put your mind to becoming stronger and braver you will succeed.

How much do you love yourself?

How many times a day do you find fault with yourself, your body and your heartfelt emotions?

Suddenly, your partner is not interested in you anymore.
You lose your best friend or most valuable possession.
You fall in love with a married woman.

Life events often bring deep pain.

There are moments when everything hurts, everything you believed in and trusted is not valid anymore and your life is turned upside down by someone else’s decision.

Loss of anything you love is extremely painful. Change hurts and it will never go away.

What do you need to do when you experience loss, pain, hurt and sorrow?
