Terror, anyone?

How to Know When You are Grounded and Relaxed

I often mention how important it is for you to be grounded. This is because being ungrounded for you, a human energy system, has the same unpleasant consequences that your light switch suffers when it is ungrounded.

You could burn down your house if your electrical box did not have a safety value to completely shut off the electrical current when the wires get overloaded. Apply the same principles to you, your body, and nervous system.

Just like a teenager who is out of control and desperately needs his parents to ground him until he comes back into balance, you need to keep an eye on yourself. The results of not being grounded are self-destructive. For example, when you are ungrounded, you are anxious, manic, irrational, and accident-prone.

Do you know when you are ungrounded? Here is a list of factors to help you know if you are grounded or not.

If you are grounded you:
Are aware of your body as a solid mass.
Feel energy in your feet.
Are aware of the bottom of your feet connecting to gravity.
You are not moving too fast or too slow.
Are aware of your physical surroundings.
Notice how you are relating to yourself and others.
Are relaxed and present, ready to response appropriately.

The first factor is the most important one. If you are not aware of your body, there is a high probability that you are not grounded. Without body awareness you are in some mental state that is defensive, weak, and unreliable.

Your holistic and mental health are determined by the degree to which you are grounded. Psychologists, coaches, social workers, and therapists, need to get grounded so they can teach you how get grounded and stay grounded.

Do you want to be perfect?

If you do not have a mess or become a mess, from time to time, then you are stuck in a tiny perfect place of rigidity. Messes are part of the natural process of transformation. Chaos is not an out of control state. It is a necessary state you must accept, if you want to be successful in personal growth and make dramatic changes in your life.

How to Accept Your Sex Fantasies and Have More Fun

I received an interesting question this week about sexual fantasies. In 1973, Nancy Friday’s book, My Secret Garden, destroyed the common belief that women do not have sexual fantasies. Yes, psychology, medicine, popular culture, and men did not think we had any!

Here is Nancy Friday’s list from Chapter Three: What do women fantasize about?

The audience
Pain and masochism
The sexuality of terror
The thrill of the forbidden
The earth mother
The zoo
Black men
Young boys
The fetishists
Other women

Although there are some gender differences, women have the full range of sexual fantasies, just like men. Sexual fantasies are normal and healthy. Often sex therapists recommend couples share their sex fantasies because this improves intimacy. In some cases, you may even decide to create each other’s fantasies in real life. As long as no one gets hurt, and you both agree, fantasies spice up your love life.

It is also healthy and normal to have sex fantasies that you do not share with your partner. Just make sure you are not obsessive about your fantasies and do not HAVE to have a certain fantasy in order to be satisfied. If you are dependent on, or obsessive about a fantasy, anxiety is your problem. The question I received is: “What stops you from acting out a sexual fantasy about having group sex.” There is a world of difference between having a fantasy about group sex and having group sex. When you enjoy a sexual fantasy, you are in charge of what you are experiencing. There is no harm to you or anyone else. Therefore, fantasies are a healthy, empowering way to express your emotions. For example, you can be extremely angry with someone and express it in your fantasy without doing damage to yourself or the other person.

Psychological research supports the fact that people who carry out violence against others have NOT felt their anger. If you do not allow yourself to feel your anger, there is a high probability you will “act out” your anger in real life by hurting others. There is equally a high probability you will “act in” your anger, hurting yourself in some way.

When you feel you anger, you do not “act out” your unconscious material on yourself or others. The same is true with sex fantasies. Sexual fantasies are a healthy way to feel your needs and desires without hurting anyone.

The unconscious, dark energy that makes you act out your sexual fantasy is disarmed when you let yourself become conscious of your sexual truths. The fantasy itself serves as a pressure value, a safety feature, which keeps you from acting out a specific behavior that could be harmful to you or others.

When women and men have rape fantasies they often judge themselves as wrong or bad. This makes you feel bad, guilty, and full of shame. The judgment is the problem, not the fantasy. Your fantasies are like dreams, some are bad, scary, intuitive, and helpful. Fantasies are a mixture of your waking life, world environment, imagination, and past learning experiences. Do not judge any of your sex fantasies. Bring them to the light of your conscious mind so they do no harm.

Accept all your sexual fantasies. If some are hurtful and unkind, accept the part of you that is hurtful and unkind. This helps you move toward being less hurtful and unkind. We are human and have inherited a lot of unhealthy garbage from our parents, governments, and religions.

Your compassionate heart knows your sexual fantasies exist for some good reason. Sort through them as they come up to the light of your conscious mind. Be humbled by your humanity. Some of your sexual fantasies need to be tossed, other tamed, just as your thoughts need to be mastered so they serve you and do not hurt you.

Pleasure often has a dirty connotation.

If you indulge yourself in pleasure, some would call you a “sinner”, “hedonist”, “selfish” or “wanton”. One of the sources of judgment in the USA against pleasure is definitely the Puritan society that Americans inherited.  Unfortunately, the Puritan cover-up-your-whole-body-with-lots-of-clothes culture replaced the Native American culture who wore just the clothes that were needed.

These Puritans came from British and still have quite a bit of control over our modern day culture.  Michael Moore’s documentary, Bowling for Columbine ended with these funny dressed Puritans as a possible source of the violence in America.

How far removed are you from the thinking that made Hester Prynne wear a scarlet letter on her dress?  Have you found judgments against pleasure in your unconscious? Probably so. Quite a few nasty judgments toward physical pleasure have been exposed in my psyche as I have broken away from my Puritan conditioning.

The cross-cultural research conducted by James W. Prescott in the 1970s found that pleasure was the antidote for violence.  Dr. Prescott, a neuropsychologist found a strong direct correlation between the amount of bodily pleasure parents gave their children and the degree to which violent behavior existed in the culture.

The Polynesian cultures were the least violent cultures and they were the ones who physically touched and loved their infants the most. It is not a surprise that he discovered that cultures who hit their children had the most violence.  Important psychological studies like this do not get the attention they need from the media, college professors, congress or clinical psychologists.

In my professional opinion, bodily pleasure is the solution to violence in America. Gun control will not improve the mental health of children who grow up and act out in violent ways at schools, marathons and theaters.  It is the mental health of America that must be improved if you want to stop violent behavior.

Until mental health is taken seriously and parents learn how to grow mentally healthy children, violence acts will continue to occur at an alarming rate. Dr. Prescott’s research is an excellent place to begin reducing violence. Pleasure is one of the alternative medicines I use to treat aggressive behavior, depression, anxiety, addictions, obsessions and general bad feelings.

If pleasure works for all these conditions, just think what adding more pleasure to your life could do for your health and wellness. Do you know what kinds of activities make you feel good?

Find Out What Bodily Pleasures You Need Exercise:

Close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Then ask your body to visually show or tell you the three pleasures it needs and wants in order to be strong, healthy and happy.  Listen carefully.  Write down the three things.

Notice any judgments you have toward these activities. Do you usually let your judgments keep you from giving these physical pleasures to yourself? Pay attention to any guilt that might be hanging around left over from those mean Puritans who wanted to see Hester suffer and hanged.

1.Get Grounded
If you get as excited as I do about Spring Energy, here is a reminder to get and stay grounded.

Grounded, means your human energy is safely plugged into the field of gravity. Just like the energy in your wall socket, you need to stay plugged in to be safe.

Different trees have different energy. Each tree gives you O to breathe and each tree gives you a certain vibration to energize you.

Try this exercise to Get Grounded:

Go sit with your back against a tree and sense the energy in the tree. See if you can tell the difference between your energy and the energy of the tree.

Relax with the tree until you become one with the energy of the tree. You will feel the difference. Your body will feel like you drop down into something. You are dropping down into something.

Do not move for a few minutes after this happens and look around you and notice what you experience.

Then close your eyes and look inside you and notice what you experience.

Take a deep breath and when you feel like it you can move–slowly and take the ground with you.
