Most people don’t like to talk about the body, smell the body,
hear the body or pay attention to the body.  Unless of course,
the body is perfectly presented and posed for everyone to
look at and admire.

From my observations, as a holistic psychologist with 35 years
of clinical experience, this is one of the major source problems
of all mental, emotional and physical diseases.  And I will be
so bold as to say that the results of ignoring your body do not
need an artificially contrived study to back up its common sense.

There are many facts that are plain to see.  All you have to do is
pay attention to what you and other people are doing to become
more aware of natural laws, facts and vital information that could
make you healthy, strong and happy.

Here is one of my simple observations that might help you
become more aware of how you ignore your body and the
consequences that could occur if you continue to ignore your
body.

I am sitting at my computer working on a project.  Totally
concentrating on getting all the needed words, photos, links and
such in place.  I am eager to finish and go outside to play.

It is spring after all and all the trees and plants are blooming and
I want to spend some quality time with the cherry trees over lunch.
I am concentrating so hard on what I am doing, I ignore the
rumbling sensations in my lower body.

I keep working and thinking. I want to finish posting one more
press release before I quit.  My body speaks again, I don’t want to
move, I want to finish this up so I can go play. I ignore my body’s
communication again and again.

Now, what do you think the body does? It gets louder and more
serious. The magnificent intestinal system begins to interfere and
interrupt what I am doing in no uncertain terms. Finally, the body
succeeds and I rush to the bathroom.

After many years of ignoring the needs of the intestinal system,
the results could be in a complete physical breakdown such as
colitis and colon cancer.

Imagine all the bodily sensations in your stomach that you have
to ignore when you are overweight.  Just think of all the loud
messages your body is sending you when you overwork, overdrink
and under sleep.

Therefore, one of the major actions you can take immediately to
become healthier is to improve your relationship with your body.

You need to listen to your body, smell your body, hear your body
and respond to your body when it needs something from you.

I have a deal with my body not to ignore my intelligent
intestines when they speak anymore– no matter what.

Trees save lives. You may think I am kidding but I am not.
And I don’t just mean by giving us oxygen to breathe, which
most people already know about.

In my 35 year history of getting close to people with mental
health and emotional health problems, I have observed that my
clients who hung out with trees early in their lives were not as
damaged by being ignored, abused or rejection as the ones who
did not have a healthy relationship with a tree as a young child.

The little children who had a tree to visit, cry under and climb
were much stronger in their sense of self than the little children
who did not find or have a tree to be with.  Trees helped these
children keep their self-esteem and self-confidence intact.

Trees give off energy. Trees radiate a tremendous amount of
good, healthy, strong energy into the environment.  Different
trees have very different energy.  Some little children feel this
energy and could tell you, if asked, about the different trees.

However, most adults would not tell you about their early
relationship with trees because they would not feel safe telling
you.  Not unless you got really close to them and they trusted
you emotionally.  Emotionally safe people are hard to come by.

However, I hope you have an emotionally safe person to share
your deepest secrets with and I hope you have a healthy
relationship with at least one tree.

You need tree energy as an adult as much as you did as a child.
It was the double blossom bright pink cherry trees on Kelly
Drive in Philadelphia that gave me my first vibrant moment as
an adult.

Graduate school, internships and post-Doctorate training took
away all the fun and pleasure in my life.  At the end of this
psychological education journey, I spent a Sunday afternoon,
relaxing underneath a whole bunch of blooming cherry trees
along the Schuylkill river in Philadelphia.

Receiving the energy of these magnificent, cherry trees allowed
me to feel safe enough to drop down into a colorful, exquisite
vibrant moment.  I entered a whole body experience where all
thoughts stopped.

Instead of thinking, I was feeling.  I felt my whole body and the
physical reality that was all around me.  I was fully alive in the
moment.  Wow, was I ever happy and alive. Finally, I was
returning back to normal.

Bless all trees, especially the heart loving, heart opening,
cherry trees.

Magnolia trees and red bud trees were a special southern
spring treat in central North Carolina where I grew up.
The first sight of the colorful buds peeping out quickly
added more energy and pep to the speed and vigor of my
multitude of daily chores around the farm.

In Center City Philadelphia where I currently spend most of
my time, there are plenty of magnolia trees in my
neighborhood parks.  One area has seven strikingly beautiful
blooming magnolia trees right this minute creating a
wonderful, environment to enter with respect.

This little piece of heaven is where I eat lunch, rest, take
a nap, look at the blue sky on my back through the blossoms
and meet new friends and interesting characters.

You can certainly take the time to visit Mother Nature and
local parks, even if you live in the heart of a city.

for external, strong, potent energy.

The reason research studies always find that people feel
better after being in nature is because Mother Nature is

Mother Nature. Take a short walk to the park and sit under

I just returned from Aruba where I often sat on the balcony
looking at a small slice of the beautiful blue Caribbean sea.
I ate on the balcony, rested there, drank there and observed
all the comings and goings on both the sea and land.

The exotic birds, the wind, the palms trees, the workers, the
boats, sparkling light and security guards were there if I
chose to pay attention to them.  My feelings, emotions and
intuition were there if I chose to pay attention to them.

Of course, your inner and outer worlds are always there if you
choose to pay attention to them.  However, there is a very good
reason so many places in the world have verandas and lanais.
Being outside on the balcony gives you something that you need.

It is the simple act of being outside in nature that makes it
easier to pay attention to both the inner and outer worlds. When
you are in nature, even just a tiny slice of it, it is harder
to deny its physical reality.  After all, physical reality has
a very strong and potent energy.

However, when you are inside your house it is easy to fall into
the trap of thinking that what is inside your brain is reality.
What is inside your brain is often quite the opposite of reality.

Your brain is frequently full of false beliefs, irrational
thoughts and negative expectations.

This is the reason you may need a human energy teacher or holistic
psychologist mentor in the first place.  You need someone to help
you look outside yourself and inside yourself.  You need someone
to help you tell the difference between the untruth that is in
your brain and reality.

Therefore, you need to sit on the balcony, walk in the park,
spend time in nature in order to stay in touch with the reality
that is inside your heart and outside of your body.  And you need
to let competent, trustworthy, emotionally healthy psychologists
teach you how to tell the difference between the mental garbage
that is in your brain and physical reality.

Whitney Houston Cause of Death: Look Inward For Emotional Truths

The first suicide I was able to stop was the year after I
got my doctorate degree from Baylor University in 1976.  My
client was African-American, attractive and talented, like
Whitney Houston. She had been raped, beaten and left to die
in a back alley in North Philly.

Self-destructive behaviors can take many forms. Hating
yourself can range from being passive with your partner,
to overeating, to suicide.

The more you become aware of what is going on in your
unconscious, the better chance you have of not being
self-destructive. That is, if you don’t really want to be
self-destructive.

Self-destructive behaviors are not missing from the rich
and famous.  Many talented people like Whitney Houston
suffer with self-rejection, self-hate and end up killing
themselves one way or the other.

We could debate forever if Whitney Houston really meant
to kill herself.  However, the reality of how she related
to her body and her emotional self is proof that she did
not love her body and her emotional self.

The unconscious parts of you, such as your emotional self,
will kill you one way or the other if you do not provide
what your emotional self needs. I know this is a very
strong statement.

However, consider the possibility that this emotional
health truth, based on energy awareness, explains the
behavior of famous people like Whitney Houston and
Michael Jackson.

Whitney Houston did not ever find, accept and follow her
authentic emotional self.  She did not heal her past
emotional wounds so that she could have healthy, loving
relationships.

Whitney Houston did not learn how to love who she really
was inside and for real.  Instead she rejected who she
really was inside and for real.  Therefore, she did not
give her emotional self what she needed in order to
become emotionally secure.

You need to consider the possibility that this emotional
health truth also explains your behaviors that continue
and persist even though they do not serve you well.
Just think, you could get better results if you looked
inward and meet your emotional needs.

We do not know if Whitney Houston lacked emotional
health information, effective professional help or
personal courage.  Did she even look in her unconscious?
I don’t know.  However, from my point of view, it is
profoundly sad that so many people still do harm to
themselves when they could learn to love themselves.

You have access to the emotional health information you
need to find, accept and love your emotional self.  You
will reap big dividends if you become emotionally secure.

Holistic Health Professionals: If you do not love your
emotional self, you cannot show others how to love their
emotional self.  You need to heal your past emotional
wounds in order to be effective with your clients.
Staying in the emotional vibration is a skill that you
need to learn. There are millions of people in need of
an emotional safe place to heal.

Parents on the Personal Growth Path: You need to learn
how to love your emotional self so that you do not pass
on your unconscious issues to your children.  All of your
unconscious issues will pass on to the next generation,
unless you actively do something to stop this automatic
transfer. Begin by looking in your unconscious.

Love. Looking at this four letter word right now could be
good for your health.

We know for sure that saying loving words out loud is good
for your health.  Masaru Emoto’s experiments with water
crystals and rice reveal how much the energy of words
affects matter.

For example, he conducted an experiment with the help of
Japanese children.  He had the children say loving words to
a jar of rice in one room.  And in another room he had them
say nasty words to the rice in the jar.

The rice that had been exposed to loving words stayed fresh
and alive for a long time.  The rice that had been exposed
to nasty words quickly became black and rancid.

Just imagine how much you could benefit from saying more
loving words.  Yep, visualize how good it will feel when you
shift out of saying nasty things to yourself into saying
loving things to yourself.

Imagine what will happen to your relationships with others
when you say loving things to people instead of being
suspicious, judgmental and arrogant.

Valentine’s Day is a reminder to be more loving.
Love, love, love.

Listen to how many loving thoughts and words you say to
yourself from now until Valentine’s Day.  Notice the results.

No matter what the results are, you can definitely learn how
to stand up to your Inner Critic and tell this part of you
to get in the back seat.  After all, your brain is only a
tiny part of your wholistic, authentic, strong, self.

Holistic Health Professionals:  Does your Inner Critic
interfere with your healing work with your clients? Probably.
Become more aware of your thoughts, words and energy.  Learn
to de-fang your Inner Critic so you can show your clients
how to say more loving words to themselves and accept more
loving energy from others.

watching every move you make.  Anytime they hear you
criticize yourself, they are learning to criticize

The New York Times is running a series of articles on
anxiety symptoms, signs of anxiety and anxiety attacks.
One in five Americans admit they suffer from anxiety and
the New York Times is beginning to understand that
“anxiety is not a disorder, it is part of the human
condition.”

Last Sunday in the Times, Alissa Nutting, author of the
short story collection, “Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls‚”
and creative writer teacher at John Carroll University
wrote an article called, “An Appointment with Dread.”

She bravely shares her inner, anxious world.  Picture this.

On the outside, Alissa looks fine. She is sitting in the MD
office waiting to be seen.  The average person would not
know Alissa is feeling anxious because she looks just like
everyone else, and besides, she is pretty.

However, on the inside, Alissa is freaking out.

Alissa describes how she feels as she walks down the hall to
the medical examining office. “Although this feels like an
emergency, when we pass a fire extinguisher, I do not break
the glass. I would like to, though. I would like to activate
an alarm and run.”

How often do you feel like something is an emergency and
you know it is not a real emergency?  This feeling of urgency
and anxiety IS part of the human condition.

For example, are you the kind of person who has to jump up
and do something as soon as you think about it?  Your sense
of emergency forces you to complete a task as soon as you
think about the need to complete a task.

You have trouble relaxing, resting, and being in the moment.
You do not trust that you will complete all tasks as needed,
when needed.

This urgency that something is an emergency when it is not,
is very important to tease out, address and unlearn.

As a child, you learned to be anxious about all sorts of
things.  As you grew up, many of your anxious behaviors
became very unhelpful and ineffective.

As an adult, you have trouble relaxing, resting and being in
the moment.  Anxiety is the reason you do not have more
vibrant moments of being alive, happy and full of yourself.

Begin to recognize your sense of urgency, which is your
anxiety.  Then address the real issue.

Do not follow in Alissa’s footsteps of getting more medication

have.  Instead, address your real mental health, emotional
health and sexual health problems.

You need to unlearn all the behaviors that push you to do
something right now, in a certain and just so. Your pushy
behaviors are anxious behaviors. They are keeping you from

I received a question this week about childhood guilt in my
“Ask Dr. Jeanette” box.  You can also use this free

This particular gentleman from the United Kingdom thought he
was experiencing guilt about something he had done in his past.
He continued to relive a certain childhood event over and over
in his head, making himself feel bad and wrong about what he
had done.

He thought guilt was his problem. Yet after reading his
question and sensing his energy, I was not sure that guilt was
his problem.

Here is my answer:

“There is no need to suffer and punish yourself anymore about
your childhood behavior.  As a matter of fact, you may or may
not be suffering from guilt. I would have to do a private
consultation with you to tell for sure.”

“However, from what I pick up, guilt is not your real problem.
In a situation like yours, it is not so much what happened, as
what you are doing with what happened.”

“Look at what you are doing with what happened.”

“Your current behavior has to do with your psychological state
which does not appear to be guilt.  Your current energy state
is obsessive.  You are obsessing about your behavior.  Your
obsessive behavior could be dramatically improved with more
knowledge, information, awareness and the appropriate mind-body
skills.”

Apply this man’s situation to your personal growth.

You may think that guilt is your problem when it is not.

Look at your process to learn more about your bottom-line,
heart-line issue.

Your problem could also be how you are using what you have done
in the past.  Look  at your process to learn more about the
source cause of a problem. How are you using certain events
in your life.   Are you obsessing about them?

Obsessive behaviors in any form are the result of high anxiety.
Anxiety is what makes people repeat thoughts, events and
behaviors.

It does not matter what you obsess about, you need to reduce
your anxiety so you can relax and enjoy your life.

Professionals:  Are you paying attention to process instead of
symptoms, words, thoughts and behaviors? If not, learn more
about process and how it can help you help your clients.

Parents: Do you take your own behavior and your daughter’s
behavior at face value? Or do you look at the process of what
was happening before the defensive reaction occurred?  Look at
what happened before the unhelpful behavior occurred to find
long-lasting solutions to real problems.

Reason New Year’s Resolutions Fail: Unconscious Motivation Stronger than Self Motivation

For those of you seeking the reason you were not successful
last year fulfilling your New Year’s Resolutions and heart’s
desires, look at your motivation.

Motivation is the energy that moves you forward and makes
sure you reach your goals.  All along the way you will bump
into blocks such as fear and anxiety.  These two monsters
are a given.

Therefore, you need to learn how to overcome anxiety and
face your real fears. These two skills must be in your
self-improvement toolbox for any personal growth and
professional success.

However, you also need to pay attention to your motivations.
You may have motivations that you are not aware of that are
seriously effecting your results.

Take a look at what really motivates you.

Are you motivated by:
• Money?
• Love?
• Relationships?
• Avoiding Pain?
• Candy?
• Success?
• Peace of Mind?
• God?
• Failure?
• Avoiding Conflict?
• Freedom?

All of these “goodies” can be used to get your human
energy moving in a stronger fashion.  Some of these
“goodies” will move you toward unfulfilling professional
goals and some will move you toward unfulfilling personal
growth goals.

I am not kidding.

Your motivation for avoiding pain could be stronger than
your motivation for success.  Your motivation for money
could be stronger than your motivation for love.  Your
motivation for candy could be stronger than your motivation
for peace of mind.

When you look at the results you are getting, know that your
motivation is definitely taking you to where you want to
go…consciously or unconsciously.

You do not have to let your unconscious take you to a goal
you do not desire.  All you need to do is become aware of
what really motivates you.

Expand your awareness and make better choices to get the
results that your heart desires instead of the results that
your ego desires.

Professionals:  Are you stuck in the same ole routine?
Overworked? Not enjoying your clients?  Regroup and get more
into your heart’s motivations and less into your ego’s
motivations.  Get the holistic psychology training, energy
awareness and emotional support you need to reach your
highest professional goals.

Parents: Do you find that you are more concerned about what
others think than you are about your child and what he or she
needs? Don’t let outside factors make you control, inhibit and
hurt your emotional, sensitive, loving child.  Let love for
your child motivate you to be strong enough to stand up for his
or her needs in this anxious, crazy, out-of-balance world.

A reporter sent me a series of questions to answer on the
physical effects of falling in and out of love for an article
she was writing.

One of her questions was, “What exactly causes the
“butterflies” and “sweaty palms” when people fall in love?
Is that real or not?”

My answer:

“Yes, these physical experiences are real. Your body reacts
to everything that is going on inside and outside of you all
the time. Your body is the best barometer you have for knowing
what is really happening in physical reality.”

For example, “butterflies” and “sweaty palms” occur when you
are anxious.  These physical effects often happen to you before
you give a speech, when you are in a new situation, when you are
in an airplane and so on.

What you need to know is the feeling of love is not causing your
physical reactions of anxiety.  It is most important to sort out
the difference between love and the fear of love.

It is your fear of love that causes you to have butterflies in
your stomach.

Your fears of intimacy cause you to experience sweaty palms.
You may feel insecure about the possibility of falling in love.
Perhaps you are afraid of being vulnerable and open.

You are thinking thoughts like this:
“Does she like me as much as I like her?”
“Oh no! I will get hurt if I fall in love.”
“I can’t let him know how much I like him. He will run away.”

When you are in love your body reacts very differently.

You are feeling love and not thinking anything. Your body is
relaxed, open and soft when it is in the energy of love.

Real love makes you feel secure, accepted and calm. You are glad
to have a person to love and be loved by.

If you are afraid of love, now is the time to learn how to face
your fears and overcome your anxiety.   It will be good for your
mental health, emotional health and physical health to learn how
to spend more time in the physical state of love.

PROFESSIONALS:  If you are not using body awareness and its
physical truths in your work, you are not using the most powerful
tools you have to help your clients transform their fear and anxiety
energy into love energy.  Engage in continuing education to learn
how to include the body and its truths in your psychological work.

PARENTS:  Make sure you get back in your own body so you can model
healthy loving behaviors for your children instead of anxious,
fearful behaviors.  Help your children keep their body self-esteem
as they grow up by allowing them to play freely with their whole
body and spend lots of time outdoors every day.
