Psychological research has found that almost 80% of the
communication between people is nonverbal. There is even
a Journal of Nonverbal Communication being published in
California.

This means the most valuable communication skill you could
possess is the ability to read body language. Body language
is real and this concrete data is here to be reckoned with
as long as you are in the physical plane.

Just image how much it would help you in your life if you
paid more attention to body language.   Your communication
with others would dramatically improve.  You would have a
definite advantage over your competitors no matter what
business you are in.

Reading body language will give you a definite edge in
your personal and professional life.  For example, if you

from being able to read body language.

Last night I had a lively conversation with a group of my
friends about body language. One of the men in the group
vehemently disagreed with me that one can read body
language and instantly know how good a lover a woman
is and how anxious a man is.

This conversation got me thinking about how most people
do not pay attention to body language.

Do you think about the fact that your body:

Does not lie because it cannot lie?
Is constantly communicating information to others?
Could be read by someone else at any moment in time?

I am not sure exactly what made my friend deny that
reading body language accurately was possible.

Perhaps he became uncomfortable when the thought
entered his conscious mind that someone else could be
reading his body language.  As a result of his
discomfort, he reacted.  His defensive reaction was to
deny that reading body language accurately was possible.

When you are confronted with new knowledge and
information do you get uncomfortable?  Do you get
defensive? Do you deny that it is possible?

My friend could have been interested in learning how to
read body language instead of denying that it is possible.

I will revisit this conversation with him over the course
of the summer and tell him about the time that I was on
television reading the body language of the politicians’
wives in the last election.  I will let him know that he
can learn to read body language himself if he wants to.

It takes information, observation, reliable feedback and
lots of practice to become a good body language reader.
I started in 1976.

to change.” ~ Charles Darwin

Darwin hit the nail on the head with his astute observation
of what it takes to survive.  You have to adapt to change as
it occurs. This means you have to adapt to reality as real
events unfold in your life.

How adaptable are you to change?

If you do not change with the real world around you, you are
moving in the opposite direction of health and wellness.
You are moving towards…. kaput.

As publisher of this free holistic psychology newsletter, my
goal is to help you adapt to reality so that you can enjoy
life and flourish. To be adaptable you must do something new,
learn something new, be something new.

The movement toward kaput can be sudden or subtle.  This
harsh reality of survival applies to suicides like Mary
Kennedy’s tragic death this week where a mother of young
children hung herself.  This same harsh reality of survival
applies to what is going to happen to you during the course
of the coming year.

Suicide may not be in your conscious mind right now but
self rejecting thoughts could be lurking in your unconscious.
Self-rejecting thoughts keep you from being healthy, making
love and having fun.

For example, if you are fighting with your mate, getting a
divorce or breaking up with a partner, you could be holding
on to old ways of relating that you learned in your past.
This means you are reinforcing your ego-based rigidities
instead of learning something new so you can adapt to change.

Another example would be if your love life is suffering
because you move too fast and cannot sit down into the
moment with your partner.  This means you are running away
instead of learning new ways of relaxing into your body so
you can enjoy genuine sexual intimacy.

Over the course of the next year are you going to:
• Stay still and not move?
• Slowly move forward?
• Slowly move towards kaput?
• Hold on tight and become more rigid?
• Engage in real life transformation?

You can certainly learn how to change and rearrange as the
realities of your life unfold.  All you have to do is learn
new ways of relating, new ways of relaxing and new ways of
making love.

If you learn how to ride the currents of change, you will
not only survive, you will manifest health, wellness and
abundance.

Do you know what your purpose in life is?
Do you know what the purpose of traditional psychology is?

I know many of you are excited to find a holistic
psychologist who is offering an alternative to the old,
traditional psychology model.

In these exciting times when Obama is being proclaimed the
first gay president by Newsweek Magazine, as Bill Clinton
was proclaimed the first black president…the times they
are a-changing.

All across across the world, the old forms in governments,
religions and professions are being challenged because they
are no longer useful.  Traditional psychology, along with
traditional medicine, needs to undergo dramatic changes in
order to be of service to human beings.

If you take a long, honest look at the purpose of the old,
traditional psychology you can see the reason psychotherapy
is losing favor.  You can observe the reality that
traditional psychology, as it is practiced in mainstream
America, is no longer helping humanity evolve toward a
better future.

The purpose of traditional psychology is to adjust you so
that you fit into a certain culture, system or technique.
What US psychologists do to American children is a perfect
example.

American psychologists label sensitive, creative children
with a self-limiting mental health diagnosis which then
gives American physicians the right to medicate the
precious children with a dangerous drug.  The purpose is
to control the children’s behavior so that they fit into
what schools expect and parents want.

In sharp contrast, the purpose of the New Psychology is
to teach you to find, recognize and follow your real
self, so you can be true to yourself.

Wake up and pay attention.  You need to know your purpose
and find teachers, psychologists, coaches, mentors and
physicians that are in alignment with your purpose.

Does your purpose line up with the old, traditional
psychology?  Do you want to control yourself so that you
can fit into a crazy, unhealthy world that is
self-destructive and rapidly destroying Mother Earth?

Or is your purpose in line with the New Psychology?
Do you want to clean up your psychological mess so you
can relax, be assertive and become a proper guardian
for Mother Earth?

Know your purpose and act on it.

Do you know the health of your heart? If not, it is time for
a thorough heart exam.

Heartaches are real and physical. When you suffer from a
past emotional trauma, the hurt you feel is both physical
and emotional.  A broken heart is indeed broken, damaged
and wounded.

Has it been years since you got divorced? Or did you just
break up with your lover?  Or perhaps you are in the same
relationship and you feel numb, stuck and mundane. Or maybe
you have never been in a loving relationship.

In any case you need to take a heart examination and check
the health of your heart.   Let’s take a look into your
heart and see what is really there.  You can sense the
matter and energy in your heart by putting your
consciousness into your heart and taking a look.

So, put your awareness into your heart.  See if you can
look deep inside of your heart as a physical organ and as
an energy vortex.  How does your heart look, feel, taste,
sound, smell?

If you cannot see clearly deep inside, look around and
see if you can sense what is sitting on top of your heart.
See if you have heaviness, weight, resentment and sadness
barricading your heart.

Then examine the surface of your heart and sense the
physical matter in your chest.

How:
Tight are your muscles?
Sensitive is your chest area?
Open and strong is your chest area?
Closed and weak is your chest area?
Tender are your breasts?

Next, check to see if you can tell how much love energy
is pouring out of your heart.  Then notice how much love
energy is pouring into your heart.

Honestly, most people have closed hearts. Very few have
open hearts. So do not be surprised, upset or judgmental
if your heart is closed or rarely open.

Instead, begin to heal your heartache so that your heart
becomes physically stronger and emotionally healthier.

What part of you do you identify with?  Your ego or
your authentic self?

Your ego is your learned self which looks outward for
approval. You pay attention to others and seek their
approval.  You get upset and inhibit yourself when
others disapprove of you.

Your authentic self does not seek or need approval from
outside sources.  Your authentic self is strong, healthy
and happy because you get your energy from the pure,
authentic sources of energy in the world.  You are strong
and solid because you know who you are and you know you
are worthy.

Most of us have heard the stories of men jumping out of
windows during the Great Depression.  The Great Recession
is also causing a dramatic increase in suicides.

In Italy, suicides motivated by economic difficulties
increased 52 percent in 2010. In Greece, the suicide rate
among men increased more than 24 percent from 2007 to
2009. The men who kill themselves are identifying with
their ego. They do not have an authentic sense of self.

Do you identity with your relationship? Money? Work?

If your identity, which is how you see yourself, is
cemented in your relationship, your money, your success,
then you will be in great despair if your relationship,
your money or your success disappears.  This is true of
any outside factor you use to determine if you are
worthy or not.

Your ego is a false sense of self that is based on what
you think you should and should not be. This is a
dangerous place to live.  Instead move beyond your ego.

Get to know your authentic self and let its authentic
energy make you strong, solid and worthy.  You want a
genuine self-confidence that does not suddenly disappear
if you lose your relationship, money or fail at what
you do.

The two most effective tools I learned from my early
years spent training and studying as a Behavior
Therapist, Sex Therapist and Feminist Therapist were:

1. Relax and reduce your anxiety for better mental,
emotional, sexual and physical health.

2. Be assertive. Do not be aggressive or passive
because people will not like you.  Be assertive.
Assertiveness is effective. If you are passive or
aggressive you feel bad and don’t get what you
want. Lose-lose.

When you are assertive, you get what you want and
most of the time everyone is happy. Assertiveness
ensures a win-win situation.

Therefore, if you want to be stronger and healthier
in mind and body, you must learn to use the tools of
anxiety reduction and assertiveness to your advantage.

The current psychological treatments today have
forgotten these two extremely effective tools.
Every therapist and psychologist of any nature or
variety needs Relaxation Therapy and Assertiveness
Training in their tool box. Then they will reach in
their tool box at the correct moment and teach you
how to relax and how to be assertive.

If you have not taken courses and classes in these
two rock-bottom, effective, no-nonsense personal
growth areas, you need to consider how much value
they would add to your daily life.  If you cannot
find an in-person Assertiveness Training and Anxiety
Reduction course to take, take the online versions.
Online versions are also effective teaching tools.

After you take a basic course in Assertiveness
Training, you need to continue to practice your new
skills in your daily life. Practice is the only way
to get comfortable with your new communication skills.
You need to practice your assertiveness skills over
and over again until they become your new default.

However, be careful.  Practicing without reliable
feedback can be a bit risky.  You could fall into your
old habits of being passive or aggressive and not even
know it.

Look for safe places to practice and skillful teachers
to guide you into relaxing and being assertive so you
get exactly what you want.

Earth Day is Everyday: Good Vibrations Come From Trees

This week I am going to give you an exercise to do with any
tree of your choosing. Pick a tree that you like and that feels
good to you. Then go sit with your back against the tree. Try
to relax into the ground and against the tree. If you have
children, do this tree body energy awareness exercise with
them.

As you sit with your back against the tree, use your senses
to feel everything you can. Especially be on the lookout for
something new and different.

Do you feel any sensations, tiny movements or energy:
In the tree?
In your body?
Between you and the tree?
Between you and the earth?
In the ground?

If you cannot feel anything, take a deep breath and relax
even more into your body and into the ground and into the tree.
Sit with your tree in silence until you feel and sense something
new and different for you. If you are anxious, it could take a while.

However, when you become patient you will relax into the physical
reality around you.  Then, who knows, you could feel the essence of
the tree or the essence of you.

You could also:
Feel a connection between you and the tree.
Have a vibrant moment.
Feel the sap of the tree as it moves in the tree.
Get a message that you need to know to move forward.
Be intoxicated with joy when you get up and walk away.
Smile at everyone you see on the way home.

Most people don’t like to talk about the body, smell the body,
hear the body or pay attention to the body.  Unless of course,
the body is perfectly presented and posed for everyone to
look at and admire.

From my observations, as a holistic psychologist with 35 years
of clinical experience, this is one of the major source problems
of all mental, emotional and physical diseases.  And I will be
so bold as to say that the results of ignoring your body do not
need an artificially contrived study to back up its common sense.

There are many facts that are plain to see.  All you have to do is
pay attention to what you and other people are doing to become
more aware of natural laws, facts and vital information that could
make you healthy, strong and happy.

Here is one of my simple observations that might help you
become more aware of how you ignore your body and the
consequences that could occur if you continue to ignore your
body.

I am sitting at my computer working on a project.  Totally
concentrating on getting all the needed words, photos, links and
such in place.  I am eager to finish and go outside to play.

It is spring after all and all the trees and plants are blooming and
I want to spend some quality time with the cherry trees over lunch.
I am concentrating so hard on what I am doing, I ignore the
rumbling sensations in my lower body.

I keep working and thinking. I want to finish posting one more
press release before I quit.  My body speaks again, I don’t want to
move, I want to finish this up so I can go play. I ignore my body’s
communication again and again.

Now, what do you think the body does? It gets louder and more
serious. The magnificent intestinal system begins to interfere and
interrupt what I am doing in no uncertain terms. Finally, the body
succeeds and I rush to the bathroom.

After many years of ignoring the needs of the intestinal system,
the results could be in a complete physical breakdown such as
colitis and colon cancer.

Imagine all the bodily sensations in your stomach that you have
to ignore when you are overweight.  Just think of all the loud
messages your body is sending you when you overwork, overdrink
and under sleep.

Therefore, one of the major actions you can take immediately to
become healthier is to improve your relationship with your body.

You need to listen to your body, smell your body, hear your body
and respond to your body when it needs something from you.

I have a deal with my body not to ignore my intelligent
intestines when they speak anymore– no matter what.

Trees save lives. You may think I am kidding but I am not.
And I don’t just mean by giving us oxygen to breathe, which
most people already know about.

In my 35 year history of getting close to people with mental
health and emotional health problems, I have observed that my
clients who hung out with trees early in their lives were not as
damaged by being ignored, abused or rejection as the ones who
did not have a healthy relationship with a tree as a young child.

The little children who had a tree to visit, cry under and climb
were much stronger in their sense of self than the little children
who did not find or have a tree to be with.  Trees helped these
children keep their self-esteem and self-confidence intact.

Trees give off energy. Trees radiate a tremendous amount of
good, healthy, strong energy into the environment.  Different
trees have very different energy.  Some little children feel this
energy and could tell you, if asked, about the different trees.

However, most adults would not tell you about their early
relationship with trees because they would not feel safe telling
you.  Not unless you got really close to them and they trusted
you emotionally.  Emotionally safe people are hard to come by.

However, I hope you have an emotionally safe person to share
your deepest secrets with and I hope you have a healthy
relationship with at least one tree.

You need tree energy as an adult as much as you did as a child.
It was the double blossom bright pink cherry trees on Kelly
Drive in Philadelphia that gave me my first vibrant moment as
an adult.

Graduate school, internships and post-Doctorate training took
away all the fun and pleasure in my life.  At the end of this
psychological education journey, I spent a Sunday afternoon,
relaxing underneath a whole bunch of blooming cherry trees
along the Schuylkill river in Philadelphia.

Receiving the energy of these magnificent, cherry trees allowed
me to feel safe enough to drop down into a colorful, exquisite
vibrant moment.  I entered a whole body experience where all
thoughts stopped.

Instead of thinking, I was feeling.  I felt my whole body and the
physical reality that was all around me.  I was fully alive in the
moment.  Wow, was I ever happy and alive. Finally, I was
returning back to normal.

Bless all trees, especially the heart loving, heart opening,
cherry trees.
