Getting my post-doc at Temple Medical School with Dr. Joe Wolpe, had
many perks. One of them was meeting famous psychologists in person
for a master seminar. Meeting Dr. Albert Elias, a tall thin, wiry man
who appeared to be quite anxious, even though he reassured us he was
very relaxed comes up in my mind as I write The Vibrant Moment for
this month. Dr. Elias was sure his Rational-Emotive Therapy could
cure any mental health problem and make you as happy as he.

As I remember him and his approach, is reminds me of the current
Positive Psychology approach. Dr. Martin Seligman started this
movement, which is also rational, and tells you that all you have to
do is made the choice to think positive and be positive. After over
45 years of exploring consciousness and looking for ways to empower
us to enjoy life more, I do not find either of these rational
approaches to be effective in living a relaxed-in-the-body life of
authenticity and integrity.

Shakespeare, the best psychologist I know, said it clearly, the
choice you have as a human being is “To be or not to be.” In the
flesh, you cannot change who you are. You were born a unique bundle
of joy and lo and behold, that is the energy you are working with in
this lifetime. The question is what are you doing with your innate
energy? Are you inhibiting your light or accepting your light?

Often we make ourselves wrong and call ourselves bad when we feel sad,
angry and afraid. Being sad, angry and afraid is normal and healthy if
you live in reality. When you are true to yourself, you are a part of
nature. Like nature, you wax and wane; you do not choose when to wax
and when to wane. Life events, like the weather, affect you and you
effect life events.

To enjoy more vibrant moments, relax and be yourself in the moments
of life’s up and downs. You can be present, feel grateful and be
loving toward yourself in any emotional or mental state. Hug yourself
and give yourself more love, no matter what you feel or what is
happening to you. Include others in this love vibration and you feel
good all over.

============================

Regular readers of The Vibrant Moment know how important it is to distinguish the difference between your real fears and your irrational thoughts. Your irrational thoughts scare you to death and do not go away until you expose them and learn how to stop them from controlling you. Irrational energy is what makes you anxious and unpleasant to be around.

Your real fears exist to keep you safe. However, if you avoid them, your real fears also control you. To be self-confident you must do what Mary Renault, the author of numerous books on Alexander the Great, said he did. You must “face your biggest fear and lay it dead at your feet.” Alexander is a great model for how to be brave, honest and strong.

I am writing a free special report for my new website about what to do when you are anxious, afraid and worried. If anyone would like to read it and give me feedback, email me and I will send you a copy.

Here is an excerpt from the report, “What to do When You feel Anxious, Worried or Afraid:”

“There are many real fears, from a fear that you need to get a job to support yourself, to the fact that someone could break into your home and hurt you. These real fears are based on the amount of stress you have in your life and the actual things that happen to people, houses and money. Even if you have money and health, you can lose them. Even if you have a home, the weather can destroy it. Trust me, there are many real events that are scary and could happen to you; not the least of which is being abandoned by a loved one by death or design.

Here are some effective ways to deal with real fear:

1.  Find out the facts about what is going on.
2.  Face your fears and do not make reality worse than it is.
3.  Give yourself reassurance and get it from others.
4.  Educate yourself about how to handle the problem.
5.  Take direct actions that make you safer and address your fears.
6.  Give yourself comfort and get it from others as you go through the hard time.

Stress is real. Empathy helps. Often, once you see a clear path about how to handle a problem, you are no longer afraid or anxious. This is the first thing I recommend you do to handle your stress and become more relaxed. Get help from reliable sources about what you need to do to protect yourself and what actions you need to take to solve your problem. Always ask for help and use it. Do not be a fool and think you know it all.

My real fears diminish as soon as I:

1.  Know what to do.
2.  Get a rational explanation of what is really going on.
3.  Realize I am wrong! What a relief, I am wrong. Thank goodness.
4.  Learn there is nothing else I can do about the situation.
5.  Admit I am not the smartest person and that is ok. Just don’t rub it in.

If you take the above actions, you are facing your fears. As a result, you feel more relaxed and self-confident. Please pause and enjoy the pleasure of finding and using more of your inner strengths. This relaxed, self confident state is the place you want to return to again and again.”

Life is a process, enjoy being alive in each moment.
