For example, in my speech, “How to Work Smarter, Not Harder” at the University of Pennsylvania Business Association, I used the second law of thermodynamics.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics states, “In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state.”

What this means is that you will run out of gas if you don’t add gas.  There is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine. You run out of gas just like a car runs out of gas. Energy must be added to you and the car if you want to keep moving forward.

If you want to work smarter, not harder, you need to use the second law of thermodynamics or you will burn out quickly. If you want to be vital, full of energy and happy you must use this law to reach your goals.  If you want to be physically healthy so that your cells have enough energy to flourish, you must honor this law or you will become sick and you could die.

You must fill up your physical body with vital energy on a regular basis throughout your day as needed. If you do not, you will run out of energy so you cannot work to peak performance and you cannot play with joy. This is a law and you cannot trick it or override it.

However, your brain can trick you and override you. Your brain can convince you that you need to keep going and going and going until you are depleted, burned out, tired and sick.

Does your brain push you? Control you? Pressure You? Scare you?

Better learn how to tame your thoughts and listen to your body.  You need to stop thinking and start feeling your body. Your body will tell you exactly when you need more gas.  Start listening to what your body needs every minute of every day to avoid burn out, depression, misery or sickness.
