Sometimes they are more comfortable and vulnerable than others. This is natural and normal. Keep looking at what their body tells you about how much they blame others. How grounded are they? Notice if they have the ability to protect you and keep you safe. Their body cannot lie but their words do.

Have fun learning to read your body language and others. Your mental health depends on how much you honor your body. Pay attention to it, listen to it, and give your body the love it needs for good mental health.

Honestly, I never even thought about her sexual health improving as a result of teaching her to relax and feel her emotions. She had a husband, they had sex, no known sexual problem. However, people today, and according to the World Health Organization, sexual health is:

“a central aspect of being human throughout life encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. Sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviours, practices, roles and relationships. While sexuality can include all of these dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed. Sexuality is influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors.” (WHO, 2006a)

As you can see, your sexual health is involved not only with your innate physical responses but interacts with all the existing factors in your outside world. As a holistic psychologist and sex therapist I base your sexual health on your ability to love yourself and others. This means you need to love your body, sexual response, emotional expression, and spiritual energy.

First, you need to know that your sexual health does not depend on having sex with someone else. Absolutely, not! You can also have pleasurable physical organisms without being touched by another person. You can have an amazing spiritual kundalini experience without being touched by another person.

Your sexual health has to do with how you relate to your sexuality, not how someone else relates to your sexuality. For good sexual health you must know, accept, and love your own unique blend of sexual needs, desires, and responsiveness.

If you are sexually healthy you will be:
Able to let go of control and feel your body feelings
Aware of your body and how it feels when you move
Able to relax into your body as needed
Comfortable with your natural body orders
At ease touching your body for comfort and pleasure
Able to let loving people touch your body
Receptive, allowing energy into your body
Expressive, giving energy outward to others
Spontaneous and free of inhibitions
Able to love and be loved
Able to give and receive physical pleasure
Comfortable having orgasms alone and with others
Self-confident with or without a sexual partner

Write down which of these abilities you are already good at and which you need to work on. Your degree of sexual health depends on how many, how much, and how often, you enjoy these qualities and experiences. The more, the better your sexual health.

This week pay attention to how you relate to your sexual self. Is she or he “in the closet, hiding from you?” Or are you in love with your sexual self, protecting this part of you from inner or external judgments? Just notice, do not make yourself wrong about what you notice.

How to Accept Your Sex Fantasies and Have More Fun

I received an interesting question this week about sexual fantasies. In 1973, Nancy Friday’s book, My Secret Garden, destroyed the common belief that women do not have sexual fantasies. Yes, psychology, medicine, popular culture, and men did not think we had any!

Here is Nancy Friday’s list from Chapter Three: What do women fantasize about?

Anonymity
The audience
Rape
Pain and masochism
Domination
The sexuality of terror
The thrill of the forbidden
Transformation
The earth mother
Incest
The zoo
Black men
Young boys
The fetishists
Other women
Prostitution

Although there are some gender differences, women have the full range of sexual fantasies, just like men. Sexual fantasies are normal and healthy. Often sex therapists recommend couples share their sex fantasies because this improves intimacy. In some cases, you may even decide to create each other’s fantasies in real life. As long as no one gets hurt, and you both agree, fantasies spice up your love life.

It is also healthy and normal to have sex fantasies that you do not share with your partner. Just make sure you are not obsessive about your fantasies and do not HAVE to have a certain fantasy in order to be satisfied. If you are dependent on, or obsessive about a fantasy, anxiety is your problem. The question I received is: “What stops you from acting out a sexual fantasy about having group sex.” There is a world of difference between having a fantasy about group sex and having group sex. When you enjoy a sexual fantasy, you are in charge of what you are experiencing. There is no harm to you or anyone else. Therefore, fantasies are a healthy, empowering way to express your emotions. For example, you can be extremely angry with someone and express it in your fantasy without doing damage to yourself or the other person.

Psychological research supports the fact that people who carry out violence against others have NOT felt their anger. If you do not allow yourself to feel your anger, there is a high probability you will “act out” your anger in real life by hurting others. There is equally a high probability you will “act in” your anger, hurting yourself in some way.

When you feel you anger, you do not “act out” your unconscious material on yourself or others. The same is true with sex fantasies. Sexual fantasies are a healthy way to feel your needs and desires without hurting anyone.

The unconscious, dark energy that makes you act out your sexual fantasy is disarmed when you let yourself become conscious of your sexual truths. The fantasy itself serves as a pressure value, a safety feature, which keeps you from acting out a specific behavior that could be harmful to you or others.

When women and men have rape fantasies they often judge themselves as wrong or bad. This makes you feel bad, guilty, and full of shame. The judgment is the problem, not the fantasy. Your fantasies are like dreams, some are bad, scary, intuitive, and helpful. Fantasies are a mixture of your waking life, world environment, imagination, and past learning experiences. Do not judge any of your sex fantasies. Bring them to the light of your conscious mind so they do no harm.

Accept all your sexual fantasies. If some are hurtful and unkind, accept the part of you that is hurtful and unkind. This helps you move toward being less hurtful and unkind. We are human and have inherited a lot of unhealthy garbage from our parents, governments, and religions.

Your compassionate heart knows your sexual fantasies exist for some good reason. Sort through them as they come up to the light of your conscious mind. Be humbled by your humanity. Some of your sexual fantasies need to be tossed, other tamed, just as your thoughts need to be mastered so they serve you and do not hurt you.

Do you know what you need and want?

So many people tell me that they do not know what they want and need. They just don’t know or they are not sure and secure in their knowing. Knowing exactly what you want and need is the first step in getting what you want and need. Otherwise, you do not have a chance!

In order to know what you want and need, you must listen to the correct answer. Listening to your ego and brain does not “grow corn.” Your ego leads you to more control, anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. On the other hand, listening to your heart and body grows sweet, delicious corn. You are happy and satisfied when you follow your heart. Spring is the time to plant the correct seeds so you have a good harvest in the fall.

This means you must learn how to bypass your brain and listen to your heart, emotional self, and body. A simple question like, “What do I really want to eat for dinner?” can make the difference between being grumpy and feeling happy. Getting the correct answer can make the difference between successful, permanent weight-loss and failure.

If you already know what you need and want, make a list now before reading any further. Your list can range from food for dinner, to your dream vacation, a new job, or healthy relationships. After you write down your desires and needs, examine each one to make sure the source is from your heart.

When you listen to your heart and body you have the potential to experience pleasure and health. Your body wants to be healthy and your emotional self wants to be happy. They rejoice and respond when you give them what they need and want. Weight-loss and success become easier and more fun.

How do you get the correct heart-felt answer?

1. You stop thinking.
2. Take three deep breaths.
3. Ask your question.
4. Listen.
3. Honor the answer.

If you listen deeply and allow the answer to come to you instead of deducting it, it is from your heart. For example, ask your body what it wants to eat. Listen and receive the answer. The answer may come in words, sensations, and colors.

Ask your emotional self, the little girl or little boy inside of you, what would taste yummy. The answer may come in feelings, knowings, words, or images. Be quiet, receive, and honor the answer or answers.

If you do not hear and receive answers, this means your critical, judgmental self is stopping you from connecting with your emotional self. Also, notice what you do if you receive an answer and do not honor it. Could it be that your judgmental self is telling you the answer is not good for you, is incorrect or not healthy?

Listening to yourself and others grows delicious sweet corn. You relate more effectively with others and they enjoy your company. You relate better with yourself so your emotional self and body are happy and healthy instead of resisting you and foiling your plans.

When I first noticed I was nervous before a certain client arrived for our session, I became very curious as to the reason I would experience anxiety with her and not any of my other clients. My client always dressed perfectly, had lots of money, a good job, and had no problem except for losing her partner.

Exploring the reason I was nervous about meeting with this client lead to one of my first major breakthroughs as a young psychologist. I discovered the physical difference between control and power. Most people, and many psychologists, are fooled by the man or woman who exhibits a great deal of control.

In some circles, controlling your behavior is highly praised and valued in the USA and Europe. In my early psychotherapy groups, I often had to deal with some members putting the controlled person in the group up on a pedestal. As a result, they felt “inferior” to the person who was in control.

Many highly controlled people are functional in the world because they are rewarded and reinforced for being “in control.” Even current psychological treatments in 2014 focus on controlling your anger, having to be positive, and thinking your way to happiness.

However, since I was using relaxation therapy and desensitization therapy back in the late 1970’s to reduce anxiety in sexual situations as a sex therapist, I knew that control was never functional in the bedroom and in matters of the heart. Control of any sort immediately kills emotional intimacy and delicious lovemaking.

As I felt my anxiety about the client who was about to arrive in my office, I suddenly realized my client was in control. She put herself on a pedestal, she was perfect. As a result, she was unpleasant to be around. I was not looking forward to seeing her.

When I realized she was in control, I knew she was highly anxious. Knowing she was anxious make it easy to be compassion toward her so I could then help her relax her body so she could feel more comfortable being herself.

The bottom-line is, the more anxious you are, the more controlling you are. The more relaxed you are, the more powerful you are.

Reading body language is extremely helpful. A tense body is different from a relaxed body. Power and control cannot exist in your body at the same time. You are either in a state of power or control. One physical state blocks out the other.

You get to choose power or control every moment of your life.

Real power is the healthy energy that is measured by physicists as voltage. The more voltage, the more power. When you are in a state of power you radiate good energy around you and your resistance to disease is high.

Power is the vital energy that gives you vibrant moments. Notice what, when, where, and how you control yourself. Then, choose to be powerful by loving yourself as you are in the moment. Give up seeking to be in control.

Something you learned is very different from something you did not learn.

A conditioned response is something you learned. An authentic emotion is something you did not learn. An example of an authentic emotion is love. You did not learn to love, you were born loving. And a matter of fact, I would say you were born TO love. If your heart feels love for something or someone you feel love and that is that.

The reason you were a bundle of joy as a little baby is because you felt and expressed so much love. Now, as an adult, you feel the energy of love bubbling up in your heart from time to time. This feeling happens organically in your heart and solar plexus, without any thoughts or reason.

Once your heart is full of love, this energy naturally radiates outward away from you. This powerful energy is exactly what you need to be healthy in heart, mind, and body. Love is what you need to be happy and effective. Love connects us to each other and makes life worth living.

Of course, you can deny, repress, stop, and block your authentic feelings of love. Unfortunately, this is exactly what a large number of human beings do. What are you squeezing and hurting when you inhibit the energy of love?

It is quite interesting that western medicine finds that the thymus on most adults has atrophied. Yes, this means your thymus may have dried up and stopped working properly. Could this be because your heart was not allowed to fully feel the love it feels? Consider the possibility.

It has been well established by western medical research that the thymus regulates the immune system. According to eastern medicine, the thymus regulates the heart charka.
