While snorkeling in Hawaii, out in a big, ocean tide pool, I encountered a giant 150-year-old green sea turtle.  As soon as her large, old, wrinkled neck and huge bobbing head came into clear focus, I grabbed my heart, stopped breathing and gasped.  She was bigger than me.

Hanging still in the water which was connecting us, I paused in wonder and awe.  This ancient sea turtle was resting her head on a large rock and resting her huge body upon the bottom of the sea.  I did not move for a very long time. Being so physically intimate with this powerful creature transformed me.  I will never be the same.

How big is your world?
How much bigger could your universe become?

Some people stay in the little safe pond they were born in and never have the courage to swim a little harder and further in order to reach a bigger pond.

Just think, if you worked hard enough you could reach the bigger pond and maybe even adventure out into the open ocean.  If you did, you would have many great adventures like a close encounter with an ancient sea turtle.

Of course, it takes a certain amount of time, energy and effort to become strong enough to swim a current that might be pushing you back to the smaller pond.  However, if you put your mind to becoming stronger and braver you will succeed.

No matter how much personal growth you have achieved or how self-confident you feel, there will always be new challenges in front of you.

This week I have three major decisions to make and actions to take.

1.  Medicare has erroneously deactivated my professional account.  Even though it is their mistake, I suffer the consequences.  Weeks after being reassured they have corrected their mistake, I still have not received payments.

2.  I must decide which of three masons to use that will not make any serious permanent mistake on the front of my house. This must occur before the weather gets cold. Each one has a different solution to the problem. Which one is correct?

3.  My neighbor refuses to correct the damage in my backyard caused by their tree and tree roots. This means my assertive behaviors, assertive requests and assertive phone calls over the last three years have not worked. I have to be brave and up the ante.

I am sure you have similar problems and challenges you must deal with on an ongoing basis. It does not matter how assertive you are in one situation, reality continues to throw curved balls at you.

Long ago, I learned that it was not wise to face new challenges alone.  Not only did I suffer emotionally, I also made bad decisions and lost money in the long run.

When you feel alone and helpless, the world is not a wonderful, vibrant place.  When you fall into this mental state, you do not know what, when, where and how to move forward.

When you feel alone and helpless, do not stay stuck in this psychological state.  Instead, reach out to others and get the help you need to move forward.  Even if you have taken appropriate assertive action, you often need help to accomplish the task before you.

So, get the help you need. You may need a business mentor, an emotionally safe coach, a holistic psychologist, a real estate friend, a lawyer or an online or audio course to help you.   Receive the help and use it.

If you receive the helping energy from other sources, you will not feel alone and helpless anymore.  You will feel connected to others and have the practical help you need to move forward and face your new challenges.

Awareness is the first step in transformation. If you missed last week’s discussion on the importance of body awareness and emotional awareness for good holistic health, read now.

To allow and create a dramatic change in your life, you must be aware of “What is.” What is reality?  What is really going on with you in this moment in time?

“What is” is the first exercise I do at all my workshops.  I begin by increasing your awareness of what is happening in you, around you, between you and what exists outside of you.

The first scan we do is with your physical body. Scan your body now and see if you can increase your awareness of what your physical form is doing in space in this moment.  Start with your feet and work up to the top of your head.

Are your feet spread out wide with relaxed toes?  Feel them, then look and see them.  If you are not barefoot, take off your shoes and look to see what your toes are doing. Really look at your toes for a good long minute. You will get lots of vital information if you pay attention to your toes.  You will be amazed at the information you receive that is intuitive, subtle and correct.

Keep scanning your body. Is your brow wrinkled with thinking?  Are your shoulders relaxing into gravity?

You need to discover:
1.  Which side of your body is more open.
2.  Which muscles are tightening up to block out love energy.
3.  Which part of your body is the most receptive.
4.  The amount of blood flow you allow in your feet, legs and hands.
5.  The amount of anxiety in your nervous system.

New awareness will be yours simply by observing, looking, feeling, sensing and listening.  Once you discover that your toes are all scrummed up and held up in the air with tension, you need to take action to relax those toes and let them fall down into gravity.

See yourself taking effective personal growth actions that are based on your new body awareness.  Visualize yourself having a breakthrough that permanently improves your life. Feel the smile on your face affect your cells in a glorious way and make you feel good all over.

What do you want out of life before you die?

Over the 35 years that I have been leading groups and
workshops I always start by asking people what they
want to get out of the time we spend together.

When they share their desires with the group it helps
them set their intention in motion. This means they
begin to go where they want to go.

When they share their heartfelt energy with the group,
it also helps me as the leader.   When I discover what
they want and need, I immediately know what I need to
present in order for them to experience what they
desire by the end of the day.

Experience is the key word.

My goal as the leader is to provide an experience in
real life that gives you exactly what you want.  An
experience is an event, an energy, a knowing that you
do not forget.

When you experience something new, different and real,
you learn something new, different and real.

What kind of experiences are you giving to yourself?

If you do not experience something new, different and
real, you will stay stuck right where you are.  Wherever
you are, is where you will be.

So if you want to move toward your desires, you need to
give yourself a new, different experience today.

So back to my first question: What do you want out of
life before you die?

Answer this question by writing down exactly what your
heart longs for…

You will:
Discover something new you did not know you wanted.
Become aware of the importance of one desire over another.
Reaffirm the goals you already knew you had.
Take your goals more seriously.
Set in motion your intention to reach your desires.

Take your written list and read it out loud a few times.
Then post your precious list on your refrigerator and
read it every day. This action will definitely help you
move forward toward your heart’s desires.

If you do this exercise, there is a good chance you will
have a new, exciting experience.

My mentor, Jack Schwarz, taught me about energy flow
back in the early 1980’s.  Sometimes I forget that you
may not know the reason energy flow is a highly
desirable goal.

My current mentor repeatedly says, “This sentence with
‘healthy energy’ in it does not tell me anything. I
do not understand what energy is and how it is related
to health. These connections are not obvious. What is
healthy? How do I know what is healthy?”

I scratch my head and wonder, “How could she not know
what is healthy? Isn’t healthy self-obvious?”  Finally
I realize, nothing is obvious until you learn about it.

So, let me see if I can make the connection between
health and energy flow clear for you.  You probably
know that stagnant water is unhealthy for you and that
you do not want to drink it.

You may have seen the American Western TV or movies
where the thirsty cowboys come across a pool of water
that is not safe to drink.  The music suddenly becomes
foreboding and scary.  You see cattle bones all around
the pool of water to indicate that the animals who
drank this water died.

Therefore, you learn that any pool of water that becomes
stagnant is dangerous to your health.  You learn that
when water stops moving, bacteria quickly begins to grow.
You discover that stagnant water will kill you if you
drink it and make you sick if you bathe in it.

We can apply this same principle to energy. Stagnant
energy is dangerous to your health in the same way that
stagnant water is dangerous to your health.

When your human energy stops moving, disharmony quickly
begins to grow. Stagnant human energy will kill you if
you hold on to it and make you sick if you hang out
in it.

Stagnant energy exists in your:
1.  Body
2.  Mind
3.  Energy field
4.  Numerous relationships with the outer world
5.  Groups
6.  Organizations

Energy that does not move makes you sick, unhappy and
ineffective. Stagnant energy in your cells over long
periods of time can kill you.

Stagnant energy creates:
1. Mental illness
2. Emotional immaturity
3. Physical disease
4. Mundane living
5. Ordinary existence

Therefore, stagnant human energy is unhealthy for you
in any form. The antidote to stagnant energy is
flowing energy. This means that flowing human energy
is healthy for you in any form.

Holistic health is defined by the amount of energy
moving in your mind-body at any given point in time.
The more energy flow, the healthier you are in body
and mind.

This means you need to allow your energy to flow more
freely if you want to be healthier and happier.

What does it take for you to be genuinely happy and healthy?
What is the essence of what you need to know to be effective?

In 2002 at a conference in Mankato, a woman came up to say
hello to me after my workshop, “New and Exciting Ways to
Heal Your Mind and Body.” I did not recognize her.  She
reminded me that she was a client I had worked with 20 years
earlier in Philadelphia!

After our enthusiastic hugs, she offered to tell me the one
thing that had helped her the most that she learned from our
work together. Quickly, I shook my head, eager to hear this

between how power feels in my body and how control feels in my body.
I use it to this day to know the difference.”

Wow! In the early 1980’s, when this woman was my client, I
was just beginning to develop my new body-emotional-energy

Breaking away from the traditional models of psychology had
been difficult and scary all along the way for me. So her words
were like music to my ears.

Her feedback reveals the essence of what you need to learn in
order to become powerful and effective.

You need to know the difference between control and power. Then
you need to be able to feel this difference in your own body.

You need to know what control feels like in your body because it
is unhealthy for you.  No matter what you think, say or do,
controlling energy is stagnant.  Stagnant energy makes you miserable
and sick.

You also need to know what real power feels like in your body
because it is healthy for you. Power is flowing energy. Flowing
energy, no matter what you think, say or do, makes you healthy
and happy.

Being able to sense and feel this difference, puts the healthy part
of you in the driver’s seat. The unhealthy part of you, cannot fool
you any more.

If you are a psychologist, massage therapist or coach: Learn the
difference between control and power. Then learn to feel this
difference in your own body. Soon, you will not be fooled by your
clients’ reactions, defensiveness and manipulations.  Otherwise, you
may react to your clients’ control issues and get entangled in
unhealthy relationship dynamics.

If you are a parent: Wouldn’t it be great if you could teach your
child to know what is healthy for her and what is not healthy for
her by how it feels in her own body? Her self esteem would skyrocket.
Children learn by modeling your behavior. Show them the way.

My, My Maine continued….

Leaving the coast was hard. I love the sea so much I never want to leave, but we said goodbye to peak red trees and the known beauty of Maine.

If you never let go of what you already have, you cannot get anything better, so off we went to a new part of Maine. Hoping for the best……..

We found the Lakes Region and checked into our charming new home, Wings Hill Inn just in time for tea and cookies. My, my, the cookies were tasty. Buttery and melted in your mouth. I stashed two in my room for later.

I am always in search of sunsets. Can’t get enough of them and the timing is frequently off. We had a few minutes of anxiety about getting our car parked somewhere, just like in the city. Naturally, I wanted to see the sun set over the mountains and the water. The viewing had to be just perfect you know.

Later we learned, all we had to do was walk from our Inn to the shores of the lake. This is the reason you want to hang out at a place long enough to get to know how to take care of your needs.

Sunsets are one of my huge needs. I slowly watched the sky turn into raging colors……..

This sunset alone, was worth leaving the coast for, the sunset was prettier than any I have ever seen on my many trips to the Maine coast. One of the innkeepers, Chris said, “Gorgeous sunsets are consistent, night after night.” A place you can count on getting your sunset needs met is a rare place indeed. Keep that in mind.

Who would expect to find elegant dinning in the rural regions of Maine? Wow, were we pleased to get good coffee and eggs benedict, my favorite, with extra hollandaise. Reading the press on the walls, we discovered, we had landed in the middle of two chefs, married to each other, both graduates of the American Culinary Institute. Besides the A+ food, there were nice little extra touches, like our names on the menu welcoming us and saying goodbye to those who were leaving. Felt good.

After a friendly chat and recommendations from Tracy, the other innkeeper, we headed out for a day in nature. We took a vista lovers hike, looking down on the many lakes in the area. The trees were past peak, but still mighty good looking. This hike was for Jenna who loves the views on the hills.

Next we walked in a clean, pure forest, miles and miles of pristine nature. This hike was for me. I need to be in the middle of the forest, surrounded by her energy. These pristine trees felt so good to walk in, around and among. The smells in the forest brought me deep pleasure and reassurance.

My goal was to take nature’s energy back home with me to the city, so I soaked reality up and stored her power inside for later.

We even had time for a short kayak trip on a pond before getting cleaned up for our 5 course dinner. How perfect is that? A day in nature, wild and free; and then a gourmet dinner right at our own home. Didn’t even have to drive anywhere to get there in the dark. We had a bottle of Pinot Noir in the trunk of our rental car, which was perfect for whatever we choose to eat.

I have to tell you the truth. The meal we had at Wings Hill Inn, ranks close to the top of my list. The only other meal that tops it, is the one I had in Fountaine Bleu at the Black Eagle restaurant in France back in 1995. Admittedly I have not eaten at every great restaurant in Philadelphia or the world, but Wings Hill Inn is at the top of my list in America. The food is worth going to the country for. I had two, new peak experiences, one with Tracey’s French Toast and the other with Chris’ delicate, creamy celery soup.

Heaven. Fresh, clean nature and excellent gourmet food, a combination which is hard to find and even harder to beat.
