===========================

Getting my post-doc at Temple Medical School with Dr. Joe Wolpe, had
many perks. One of them was meeting famous psychologists in person
for a master seminar. Meeting Dr. Albert Elias, a tall thin, wiry man
who appeared to be quite anxious, even though he reassured us he was
very relaxed comes up in my mind as I write The Vibrant Moment for
this month. Dr. Elias was sure his Rational-Emotive Therapy could
cure any mental health problem and make you as happy as he.

As I remember him and his approach, is reminds me of the current
Positive Psychology approach. Dr. Martin Seligman started this
movement, which is also rational, and tells you that all you have to
do is made the choice to think positive and be positive. After over
45 years of exploring consciousness and looking for ways to empower
us to enjoy life more, I do not find either of these rational
approaches to be effective in living a relaxed-in-the-body life of
authenticity and integrity.

Shakespeare, the best psychologist I know, said it clearly, the
choice you have as a human being is “To be or not to be.” In the
flesh, you cannot change who you are. You were born a unique bundle
of joy and lo and behold, that is the energy you are working with in
this lifetime. The question is what are you doing with your innate
energy? Are you inhibiting your light or accepting your light?

Often we make ourselves wrong and call ourselves bad when we feel sad,
angry and afraid. Being sad, angry and afraid is normal and healthy if
you live in reality. When you are true to yourself, you are a part of
nature. Like nature, you wax and wane; you do not choose when to wax
and when to wane. Life events, like the weather, affect you and you
effect life events.

To enjoy more vibrant moments, relax and be yourself in the moments
of life’s up and downs. You can be present, feel grateful and be
loving toward yourself in any emotional or mental state. Hug yourself
and give yourself more love, no matter what you feel or what is
happening to you. Include others in this love vibration and you feel
good all over.

How Can You tell if Your Relationships are Healthy?

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Relate equally.

==============================

How healthy are your relationships with others?

How healthy is your relationship with yourself?

The answer to one is the answer to the other. How you relate to others is how you relate to yourself. Most of us relate to ourselves sometimes with love and sometimes with judgment. The more loving you are, the healthier you are. Therefore, is not a surprise that when we are self-accepting, our relationships are healthier and when we are self-rejecting, we feel rejected.

However, did you know that relationships cannot be healthy unless they are equal?

Equality is a reliable way to measure how healthy any relationship is at any point in time. When you are feeling superior or inferior to the other person, you are in an unhealthy relationship dynamic. For example, when I used to feel superior to others because I was such a good, righteous person, I did not have many genuine friends. I felt alone because I was on a pedestal where healthy relationships cannot exist. Your Self-righteous Ego Energy is not only unhealthy for you, it physically repels all the vibrant energy around you.

When I used to feel inferior to Divine Energy, I could not communicate and connect with the invisible energies on the planet. I felt alone and did not know how to fulfill my soul’s purpose because I was hiding in my Inadequate Ego Energy. Take note of your defensive positions and how often they physically keep the abundant healthy energy of the cosmos from reaching you.

You must come down to earth and out of the darkness in order to live in The Vibrant Moments of life. Other people cannot reach you when you are on a pedestal. Your Sage cannot reach you if you are hiding in a dark cave. In contrast, since I was a child, I have felt love for Mother Earth, as well as loved by her. When I was sad, I would go sit under the weeping willow tree and share my deep sorrow with her. Afterwards, I always felt better and more resilient, ready for whatever came next.

You can use equality as a scientific measure to reveal when you are stuck in an unhealthy relationship. Equality is the only physical reality that creates an open, empathic, healthy energy flow between you and others. As you notice how you relate to others, you could be surprised at how many people you do not feel comfortable with. It is also helpful to notice how you relate to different parts of yourself. Do you relate equally to your body, your emotional self, your Inner Critic? Do you judge your male energy and accept your feminine energy?

At any moment you can move from your superior or inferior position to an equal position. Notice what happens when you shift out of your ego into your accepting, non-judgmental self. When you feel more relaxed and comfortable being yourself, this invites others to relax and feel comfortable with you.

Enjoy getting to know deeper parts of yourself as you get closer to others.

How to Open Your Heart and Follow Your Bliss

—————————————————–

Do you know the difference between your super responsible ego energy
that is dictated by the “shoulds” your brain insists you must do AND
the glow of warmth living in your heart that calls out to you to
follow and express?

Many people have the belief that when they grow up they must be
responsible by being polite, good and right. This kind of
responsibility is heavy on your shoulders and does not lead to
vibrant moments. Ego energy is flat, heavy, rigid and makes you
anxious and insecure.

Even though my clients learn that it is their ego that makes them
anxious, they are afraid of letting go of their Perfect Selves. They
are sure they will be out of control and do the wrong thing if they
relax and stop taking care of others. Are you afraid of letting go of
control? Do you think you need your super responsible ego energy to
make you do the right thing?

If you want to experience freedom, joy and vibrant moments, you need
to challenge this false belief everyday. Even though I know my
defensive ego, Dr. Tight-ass, is what makes me unhappy, anxious and
helpless, I sometimes get fooled by her loud, bully voice in my head.
Every morning when I wake up I explore what is in my consciousness.
Shifting out of any ego energy hanging around me into my real
feelings immediately improves the knot in my stomach.

In the real, physical world you can trust your heart. Your heart is
tender, loving and kind. Its energy is like the sun, it radiates
energy outward and makes you strong, secure and sturdy. Your heart is
amazingly wise because it is connected to your body, Mother Earth and
the Cosmos. When you follow your heart, it leads you to freedom, joy
and a responsibility that is far more effective than that of your
ego.

Your heart does not blame, like your brain. When you follow your ego
you blame yourself and others. When you follow your heart you are
responsible for what you are experiencing. Compassion pours out of
you toward people and things. You do not deliver harsh judgments to
yourself or others. You stand in the batter’s box and show up —no
matter what.

With an open heart, you live in reality, instead of your thoughts
about reality. What this means is that you are aware of your body,
earth and cosmos as real energies that you interact with. When you
are in your thoughts, beliefs and ego, your body awareness is absent.
Use your body awareness was a reliable test to know if your ego is
present or not!

With an open heart and body awareness you accept and adjust to what
exists. You do not have expectations of how things should be. You
dive into your unconscious and come up with yucky stuff to transform.
No matter what society judges you about, the amount of
self-confidence you gain from living with an open heart is profoundly
comforting.

The bottomline is that the more you avoid letting go of your
controlling ego, the more you experience helplessness, anxiety and
victimhood. So, step up to the plate and get ready to hit the ball.
It does not matter if you hit a home run or strike out, either is
just fine. You did your best. Whatever you do is good enough when
your heart is in charge.

Love yourself as you are right now in this moment. Reap the rewards
of being physically strong, relaxed and self-confident by putting
your heart in charge. The next time you feel down in the dumps, let
go of your defensive ego energy and see what happens. Email me your
results. I love to get feedback about your explorations of becoming
more self-aware.

How to Stop Addictive Behaviors

Featured

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Have fun!

After studying the psychological dynamics causing addictive behavior
since 1976, I suspect that the root cause has been found. If you want
to lose weight, stop impulsive buying, no longer need legal or
illegal drugs, the solution is to have more fun. Yes, it appears that
people become addicted to “treating” themselves to unhealthy
behaviors because they are not allowing themselves to experience
enough pleasure in everyday life.

Wow, isn’t that wonderful? How delightful it is to give yourself
permission to add more genuine fun and pleasure to each day so that
you do not need to sneak your fun and pleasure in the back door. When
you feel deprived because your Inner Critic is making you wrong for
not working all the time, you become addicted to unhealthy things,
like food, drugs and gambling. Sex addiction would also be included
because sex addicts do not really enjoy the fantastic pleasure that
true lovemaking gives your whole body and soul.

So, my dear readers, please make sure you give yourself enough fun
and pleasure each day. Your emotional self needs fun; your body needs
pleasure. Create a holistic healthy practice each morning before you
get out of bed. Check in with what your emotional self and body need
to make you happy and satisfied.

If you do not have a loving relationship with your emotional self,
the Opening the Heart audio series is an effective guide. If you do
not have a loving relationship with your body, the Overcome Anxiety
Naturally home study course guides you into a physical reality that
reduces anxiety and depression.

What to Do When You Panic and Feel Anxious

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Remove Panic.

=================================================

My handyman was on the third floor of my home making loud noises as
he worked on my balcony replacing an old stuck window air
conditioner. I was sitting quietly in my living room on the first
floor when he sent my iPhone an image of a huge, long crack under a
badly damaged window. “Oh, no!” went off in my head. Immediately, I
panicked. I thought my fragile, old Philadelphia center city home was
splitting wide open with the force being used to pull the heavy
hummer out.

I ran up the stairs to see what was going on. When I arrived, he said
it was the neighbor’s house and that I should let them know because it
was serious. Wow, how quickly panic can come and go. Since losing my
stellar health, the ongoing pandemic and multiple assaults on my freedoms,
I notice stress is harder to handle.

Later in the day when I was enjoying a swim, I remembered a scene in
an old Ellen Burstyn movie called Resurrection. It was a true story
of a healer. In the unforgettable scene, a little girl’s nose starts
to bleed at a family reunion. The girl had hemophilia so everyone
around her at the picnic began to panic because they were afraid she
would never stop bleeding. The healer gently took the little girl in
her arms and quietly separated her from the crowd. She surrounded the
child with her calm, physical presence. The healer comforted, calmed
and reassured the little girl that her nose would soon stop bleeding.
Which it did. A miracle had happened.

What is the science behind the miracle? The Law of Resonance tells us
that all objects in the cosmos, including your organs and the cells in
your body vibrate and communicate with each other. The law states that
whatever your vibrations are, they resonate with the same energies in
the cosmos. This means you are whatever you resonate with in any given
moment. When the healer’s miracle happened, the little girl stopped
resonating with the panicky crowd around her, which was scaring her to
death. Instead, the child began to resonate with the healer who was
calm and secure. The child’s body resonated with wholeness, instead of
panic.

This law, along with Learning Research, is used in the home study
course, Overcome Anxiety Naturally. Panic is never helpful, so the
first thing you want to do is remove the panic. The course guides you
week by week out of panic into the part of you who is calm and
secure. Your Inner Healer has not been destroyed by negative life
experiences. You still have the ability to resonate with vibrations
that reassure you instead of scare you.

Whether panic originates inside or outside of you, as soon as you
notice the high pitched, exaggerated energy of panic, immediately
start to consciously breathe. Instead of being automatically sucked
into a self destructive, out of control energy, keep breathing as you
check out reality. Reality may not be as clear cut as misinterpreting
my house for my neighbor’s house. However, you can handle any
challenge that life throws at you better if you remove your panic and
anxiety.

Instead, resonate with your real fear. Your real fear is an alert
vibration inside of you. This vibration’s job is to keep you safe
from any real danger by providing you with the best course of action
to take in any given moment. Your body knows what is the best course
of action to take when you encounter a man on the street with a gun
or you are being told to evacuate because the wildfire is racing
toward your home.

You have the best chance for survival in everyday life challenges or
in a crisis if you fall into gravity and feel your body resonating
with Mother Earth. Trust the wisdom of your body when it vibrates
with the cosmos.

an authentic emotion such as fear and the out of control energy of panic

on planet earth. When you know the difference in these vibrations

How to Use Your Body for Feedback about Reality and Denial

A friend was telling me about her experience with diarrhea and
stomach problems so severe she rushed to the emergency room. The
physicians used all their tests, looking for medical problems and
could not find anything. I asked, “Was it anxiety?” She looked me
straight in the face and said, “But I am not anxious.”

I have been thinking a lot about denial. What is it really and how
can we tell when we are denying something really important that
we need to know. Sigmund Freud, first described “denial as refusing
to acknowledge upsetting facts about external events and internal
ones, including memories, thoughts, and feelings.”

It always amazes me when I discover that I have been denying something.
How could I be so unaware of what my body is saying? Diarrhea is a loud
message.

The more I ponder and explore denial it seems to me that some of us
deny facts that are pleasant and enjoyable as well as upsetting ones.
If this is correct, we use denial to keep ourselves feeling bad,
helpless and victimized by life events. Wow, that victim mentality
can really creep up on you.

The next time someone says something to you that you think is not
true, pause. You could be denying something that you need to know to
stop hurting yourself. Or you could be denying how wonderful your
life really is! After the pause, breathe and feel your body. Receive
the obvious information in your body that would help you feel better,
stronger and happier.

Listen carefully, deeply and often to what your body is expressing.
The body does not lie; it tells you the truth if you are willing to
listen to it.

How to Get True Love that is Sincere and Real

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Receive Love.

==============================

“It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing
Doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah“
Duke Ellington

How much genuine love do you give and receive?

Saying “I love you” does not necessarily give anyone sincere love.
Nope, many times, it does not. Love is not a thought, belief or words
put together to be polite. Notice the empty words often used by the
egos of the world, including yours. The words are automatically
delivered, without feeling or pause.

The pause is important, both in giving and receiving. “The Swing” is
the real, genuine energy. It is in the pause that “The Swing” occurs.
It takes time for physical and emotional energy to enter your heart,
have an effect and transform energy before a response is even
possible. When you have a quick response you are uncomfortable,
afraid and anxious.

Lately, I have noticed that sometimes when I feel someone saying
something nice to me, I start to thank them. My thank you falls on
top of their words. It never occurred to me that my quick response
and words could be my way of not fully receiving their love into my
heart. However, as I become more conscious of my unconscious, my
anxious words block their love so I do not fully receive or benefit
from the genuine love given. Wow.

How could it be that receiving love makes me anxious? In order to
receive love you must be open. In order to be open, you must relax
your body and let go of control. This is the hard part. Instead of
being open and relaxed, we are often tense. Notice how afraid you are
of fully surrendering to love. When you surrender to love it is
terrifying because love becomes the boss, not you. Love moves you.
You do not move love. Love is a wave much bigger than you.

Love humbles you and destroys all your identities. Nevertheless, the
feeling of being loved is so fantastic, I am practicing staying open
and receiving love without saying a word. I feel uncomfortable,
vulnerable and small as the love enters my heart. And you will too,
when you use the key to your heart and open it so others can enter.

Your True Self and heart will become so big, happy and fulfilled you
will dance a jig as you radiate out love to all of humanity. Doo-ah,
doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah!

How to Stop Overthinking and Prevent Mental Illness and Stomach Aches

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Do Not Waste Energy.

=============================================

How many ways do you waste your precious energy?

As I age, I am re-learning many things. A-amazing how you forget some
of the effective tools you used before. Yesterday, while reading through
some old notes, I was reminded of one of the many ways I waste energy.
I know thinking about something I cannot change is a waste of energy.
Alas, we know something is hurting us and we do not know how to stop it.

To change something that is hurting you, the first step is to become
aware of something you are doing that you are not aware of. Diving
deep and re-surfacing is the pathway to transformation and more
vibrant moments. It really helps to spend time alone so you can get
in touch with reality. Virginia Wolf’s book, A Room of Ones’ Own is a
classic if you have not read about the power of having your own
space. If you do not have the luxury of a whole house or room, use
separate time and outdoor space to find your true self.

I took a month retreat to be by myself alone with “me, myself and I,”
as Joan Armatrading loves to sing. Being alone is also good because
there is no one else to blame or project your judgements on. I began by
paying close attention to what I was thinking; during the day, at night
and while eating by candlelight; with my cup of ginger tea, with my
eyes closed and open and while cleaning house.

The result? Experiencing my thoughts and what I am doing with them is
driving me crazy. Yes, it is your thoughts that drive you crazy. My thoughts
are interesting thoughts, not boring thoughts. My thoughts are
positive thoughts, not negative thoughts. Wow, these thoughts are still
driving me crazy. Yes, positive thoughts can hurt you just as much as
negative ones. It is the energy of thinking that is so controlling and
inhibiting.

When you stop to think, you stop your healthy energy flow. Seriously.
“The Thinker,” Rodin’s statue here in Philadelphia is stuck and does
not flow. Take this physical fact to heart, thinking is the way you control
yourself and inhibit yourself. Repetitive thoughts take on a physical
form, becoming a mass of energy. This energy is called a Thought
Form. When thoughts become physical, they become beliefs. Beliefs are
extremely controlling. Good beliefs are as harmful as bad ones. There
are no right and wrongs in the real world. All of man’s judgments, good
or bad are outside of reality and are harmful to your mental and physical
health.

When I finally felt the mental energy I was stuck in, I felt sick to
my stomach. So sick, I wanted to throw up. Yuck, get this nasty stuff
out of me was my body’s reaction. Wonderful. Now I cannot deny how I
am hurting myself and my body. (This is how I quit smoking way back,
read about it in the free library at drjeanette.com.) I preach all
the time to you: To empower yourself you must get in your body and
stay there. Pay attention to your physical reality and accept what
you find with compassion. Do not blame yourself or others. Reality is
reality is reality.

Bringing yucky stuff up from your unconscious and feeling what you
are doing to yourself is usually enough to get you to stop hurting
yourself. At least it is for me. I love myself enough to stop hurting
myself when I am face to face with reality. Before my retreat, my
acupuncturist told me my stomach and spleen were screaming when he
read my pulse. He was not sure how serious it was, but they were
upset. Now, I feel what he was feeling in my pulse. My stomach is
screaming. Physical feedback wakes you up to reality.

Now I notice when my thoughts upset my stomach and stop as soon as I
can. To help me stay on track when my stomach is not screaming, I pay
attention to anything I think or do that wastes energy. When I notice I
am wasting energy I begin to change what I am thinking and the actions
based on my thoughts. This helps keep the screams from developing in
the first place.

Wow, reality is sobering. I am re-listening to my audio, Tame Your
Thoughts for help.
When you stop thinking so much you stop wasting
your precious energy. When you stop wasting your energy, you get
different results. A more relaxed stomach feels better.

Regular readers of The Vibrant Moment know how important it is to distinguish the difference between your real fears and your irrational thoughts. Your irrational thoughts scare you to death and do not go away until you expose them and learn how to stop them from controlling you. Irrational energy is what makes you anxious and unpleasant to be around.

Your real fears exist to keep you safe. However, if you avoid them, your real fears also control you. To be self-confident you must do what Mary Renault, the author of numerous books on Alexander the Great, said he did. You must “face your biggest fear and lay it dead at your feet.” Alexander is a great model for how to be brave, honest and strong.

I am writing a free special report for my new website about what to do when you are anxious, afraid and worried. If anyone would like to read it and give me feedback, email me and I will send you a copy.

Here is an excerpt from the report, “What to do When You feel Anxious, Worried or Afraid:”

“There are many real fears, from a fear that you need to get a job to support yourself, to the fact that someone could break into your home and hurt you. These real fears are based on the amount of stress you have in your life and the actual things that happen to people, houses and money. Even if you have money and health, you can lose them. Even if you have a home, the weather can destroy it. Trust me, there are many real events that are scary and could happen to you; not the least of which is being abandoned by a loved one by death or design.

Here are some effective ways to deal with real fear:

1.  Find out the facts about what is going on.
2.  Face your fears and do not make reality worse than it is.
3.  Give yourself reassurance and get it from others.
4.  Educate yourself about how to handle the problem.
5.  Take direct actions that make you safer and address your fears.
6.  Give yourself comfort and get it from others as you go through the hard time.

Stress is real. Empathy helps. Often, once you see a clear path about how to handle a problem, you are no longer afraid or anxious. This is the first thing I recommend you do to handle your stress and become more relaxed. Get help from reliable sources about what you need to do to protect yourself and what actions you need to take to solve your problem. Always ask for help and use it. Do not be a fool and think you know it all.

My real fears diminish as soon as I:

1.  Know what to do.
2.  Get a rational explanation of what is really going on.
3.  Realize I am wrong! What a relief, I am wrong. Thank goodness.
4.  Learn there is nothing else I can do about the situation.
5.  Admit I am not the smartest person and that is ok. Just don’t rub it in.

If you take the above actions, you are facing your fears. As a result, you feel more relaxed and self-confident. Please pause and enjoy the pleasure of finding and using more of your inner strengths. This relaxed, self confident state is the place you want to return to again and again.”

Life is a process, enjoy being alive in each moment.

How to Fulfill Your Personal Growth Goals and New Year’s Resolutions

The Vibrant Moment – Remember: Discover Your Denial.

==============================

If you are having a hard time keeping your New Year’s Resolutions, it is helpful to take a long look in the mirror. Spending some time, each day in silence, looking inward and outward, will speed up your personal growth. Even three minutes is better than none.

Most of you know you have blind spots in your eyes and in your lives. So, how often do you pay attention to yours? Denial is one of the most self-destructive things you can do to yourself. Yet, it is one of the hardest things to notice in yourself. This is one of the major reasons you need lots of people in your life. Some of us even pay others to show us our blind spots! Great coaches, mentors, teachers and therapists are worth the investment in yourself. This is because others help you discover your blind spots.

Denial is not that complicated. If you react and get defensive, this means someone has triggered your button. Your button is a tender spot from your past that has been activated. This is not a harmful event. Your reaction is an ineffective conditioned response. Your defensiveness tells you that you need to do some serious emotional healing. Noticing when you react and how you really feel inside will lead to a permanent healing of your tender spot. Once you heal your tender spot, instead of reacting, you are relaxed and open because you feel emotionally secure.

Unfortunately, many people avoid people who push their buttons. Avoidance is not helpful. You need people in your life who trigger your buttons. If you are unsure if you are reacting, you need to learn to read energy. Reading energy is the most reliable way to be sure of anything. You can learn to feel the energy difference between a closed, knee jerk response and an open, receptive response.

So, spend time in silence. Notice when you are reacting. One step forward is enough. Heal your buttons permanently and enjoy your New Year more than you did 2021. Be patient and loving with yourself. There is no rush.
