==========================

Sitting in my living room looking up at the tall trees blowing fiercely in my back yard view in Center City, Philadelphia, I am scared.  Sandy will soon hit the New Jersey shore and my home is 100 miles inland between two rivers.

With all other storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, Philadelphia, PA has been safe.  Losing power is rare and not that scary. However, Sandy is a new force, a new concern, because it has so much energy that it could easily overpower and damage many of us in the projected pathway.

Currently, the people on the barrier islands of New Jersey, who did not leave their homes even though they were given a mandatory evacuation notice, are panicking. They are panicking because the level of water is rising so rapidly. Unfortunately, it is too late for them to get out and people may not be able to rescue them from the real danger until tomorrow morning.

Living through natural disasters like Sandy helps us understand how anxiety, fear and panic affect us.  Anxiety attacks and panic attacks are not strange and do not come out of the blue.  Anxiety attacks and panic attacks are natural consequences that occur when people deny and ignore real fears and real dangers.

Which way do you respond to real life dangers like Sandy?

1.  “There is nothing to be afraid of, everything will be alright. There is no reason to evacuate, it’s just a hurricane.”
2.  “Oh my, help, help! Sandy will be terrible, bad and awful, I have to get away immediately to safety.”
3. “There is a real danger coming. How can I protect myself and keep myself safe from harm with as little inconvenience as possible?”

As many of you know, the new, holistic psychology approach is based on the laws of energy.  Read the definition of the new, holistic psychology here: http://www.drjeanette.com/newpsychology.html

When we apply energy laws to anxiety attacks and panic attacks, we can understand the reason they occur.  Anxiety attacks and panic attacks occur when you deny any real danger or perceived danger.

When you deny a real fear of any sort, you will experience a massive amount of anxiety and panic at some point in the future. The denied energy will increase to the point that this pent up energy cannot be contained anymore and it will eventually have to be released.

Therefore, panic attacks and anxiety attacks occur after you have denied a real fear.  Anxiety attacks do not occur out of the blue from nothing. Thus, it is to your advantage to pay attention to everything you are really afraid of, even when your fear is in interpersonal relationships.

Your real fear is not irrational and ridiculous.  Your real fear will help you get ready for what you are afraid of and this preparation is exactly what you need to do to be safe.  Your real fear will guide you into protecting yourself from any real harm such as a hurricane like Sandy or a painful interaction with another person.

As I finish writing this free holistic psychology newsletter, Sandy has passed and I did not experience any harm, even though I was prepared for the worst.  Most of the people who were panicking in New Jersey seem to be alright.  If you are suffering from anxiety as a result of Sandy get the help you need so that you are prepared for the next natural disaster. I have to confess that I feel good looking out my third-floor window across the street into the bright blue tarp-covered rooftop of my neighbor.  It comforts me to see this infamous house that is on the must-see places in Center City, Philadelphia for its creative architecture is having ongoing, serious water leak problems.

It is reassuring to me that this newer, well-designed house has the same water leak problems that my smaller, old-fashioned 150-year-old house has been suffering from.

Taking a deep breath, I relax, knowing I am not alone in my water leak problems.  I even happen to know that Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, of On Death and Dying fame, had chronic water leak problems in her Healing Center in the Shenandoah Valley.

Knowing other people suffer from what you suffer from can be very comforting. This is one of the reasons I love group work and group energy. You feel much better just knowing you are not alone.

When you do not connect with others, you often feel like you are the only one in the world experiencing what is happening to you.  You feel isolated, misunderstood, different and even at times persecuted.

However, if you make the effort to connect with others, you will discover that your experiences are common human experiences. So look around you and take the risk to reach out to open, warm people and connect.

Consider joining an emotionally safe group that focuses on topics that you find interesting and appealing.  If you share your inner truths, you will find that you have the same relationship problems, the same psychological concerns and the same Inner Critic as everyone else.

Open your heart and connect with other people in an honest, truthful way.  You will feel so much better knowing you are part of the human race.

Personal Growth Advice: Feel the Difference Between Your Ego and Authentic Self

The Vibrant Moment – Self Esteem Tip: Feel the truth.

===============================

I was sitting at the kitchen table with my 84-year-old mother in Staley, North Carolina last week.  She asked me the exact same question a reader of the Vibrant Moment asked me a few days before I left Philadelphia to go visit her.

The question my mother asked is, “How can I tell the difference between when I am pushing myself to exercise and when I really want to exercise?”

The question a Vibrant Moment reader asked was, “How do you tell the difference between resistance and tuning in?”

This psychological question goes to the heart of what you need to know so that you can act on your inner truths and say no to your ego’s controlling ways.

If you cannot tell the difference between your learned, conditioned self and your authentic, wise self you will always be stuck in either resisting or pushing. You will not know what you really need and desire.

To be clear and sure of yourself, you have to break free from resisting or pushing behaviors. These behaviors are unhelpful and keep you stuck and unhappy. To break free from these unhelpful, learned behaviors you must find and access your authentic self.

Your authentic self will always tell you inner truths. Your learned ego will always tell you “shoulds” and “should nots.”  If you find and then follow your authentic self, you will be able to follow your bliss.  Every day, all day long, you will know what you really need and want.

Long ago I discovered that you cannot use talk therapy to know when you are resisting something that is good for you to do. You cannot use psychobabble to know when you are agreeing to something that you do not want to do.

The only way you can tell the difference between your learned ego and your authentic self is to become skillful in using and trusting your feeling ability.  You must know what your body is physically feeling and what your heart is emotionally feeling in order to expose your ego’s “shoulds” and “should nots.”

There is no other way I know to be clear and clean. A “should” feels dramatically different from an inner truth.

You must improve your ability to feel your body and feel your emotions so that you know with absolute certainty that you are not listening to your ego’s confusing mental messages.

Self Esteem Tip: Hold Your Ground With the Trees, Assertive Behavior

Learn to hold your ground in the forest.parktrees.jpg

The Vibrant Moment – Self Esteem Tip: Let him be defensive.
From the Center for New Psychology
Publisher: Doris Jeanette, Holistic Psychology Mentor, Coach

===============================

We are taking a holistic psychology look at defensive
behavior and defensive energy.  Read the past two issues of
“The Vibrant Moment” to see what we have discussed so far:
http://tinyurl.com/979hgah

Many readers of The Vibrant Moment want to know how to handle
girlfriends, boyfriends, bosses, mothers, sisters and brothers
when they are defensive.

The best way to handle defensive people is to be patient and
tolerant with them.  The most assertive, powerful way for you
to handle defensive people is to allow them to be defensive
without judging them and making them wrong.

Your job as a psychologist or partner is to avoid joining
others in their conflict.  You do not want to resonate with
their defensive energy, you want to maintain your own solid
self-esteem energy.

It is possible to stay out of anyone else’s conflict if you
do not react with defensive energy of your own.  You can stay
emotionally secure, physically grounded and absolutely clear
in the presence of defensive energy.

When people are defensive, they are insecure and frightened.
They feel criticized, threatened, blamed and bad about
themselves.  Therefore, if you are emotionally secure it is
possible to let others be insecure.

You can give them the room to be defensive without reacting.
You can be patient and compassionate while holding your ground,
protecting yourself and asserting yourself.

To reach this position you must remove your defensive
reactions and responses.  Then you will breath, relax and let
others experience their defensiveness without reacting.

If you do not resonate with your defensive client or partner,
if it possible that he could become aware of his defensiveness
and do some personal growth.  Or perhaps he will not notice
the way he is behaving and he will continue to have low
self-esteem.

In either case, you are emotionally secure.  You have not
entered his defensive energy and low self-esteem world, you
have stayed in your solid self confident  energy and your
solid self-esteem world.

Relationship Advice: Give Up Heartaches With Relaxation, Letting Go and Feeling

Let go and be

The Vibrant Moment – Holistic Health Tip: Breath and let go.
From the Center for New Psychology
Publisher: Doris Jeanette, Holistic Psychology Mentor, Coach
Visit: http://www.drjeanette.com
===============================

Defensiveness is the biggest psychological challenge that clients and therapists must face and overcome if they want to get positive results.  Overcoming defensiveness, in either the psychologist or their client, determines the results. There is a high probability that the psychologist will lose the client if they continue to be defensive and the client will lose the therapist if they continue to be defensive.

You can apply this same defensive challenge to all your relationships. Successful personal growth depends on being aware of when you are defensive and being able to let go and give up your defensiveness. If you let go of your defensiveness your relationships with others will dramatically improve.  If you cannot, you will become weaker and more isolated.

The problem is, it is very hard to tell when you are being defensive. It is easier to tell when others are being defensive. Yet, when your partner or friend accuses you of being defensive, you are not sure if you are or are not being defensive. And who started it first anyway?  Was it them or you? This is the nitty gritty of relationships and it drives all of us apart.

My psychotherapist had a hard time helping me become aware of my defensiveness with regular talk therapy. I just didn’t get it. The first thing I was able to become aware of was that I would think about something my therapist said to me over and over again.  I would repeat and replay the conversation explaining myself to her as I walked around Center City, Philadelphia.  Finally I got it.  What I was doing when I replayed our conversation was defending myself to her in my mind.

Later, when I began to use body awareness with my clients, it was easier and faster to teach them how to tell when they were being defensive. This was because defensiveness feels very different in your body. As a matter of fact, when you are defensive, you have no body feelings. You are in your head thinking instead of feeling.

Later, when I began to use energy awareness with my clients I was able to help them identify defensive energy by paying attention to some of these qualities.

Defensive Energy is:
Aggressive
Passive
Unhelpful
Brittle
Rigid
Weak
Ineffective
Isolating
Unsatisfying
Distancing
Self-Righteous
Jerky
Hard
Cool
Distant

I am sure you can add more items to this list.  How do you know when you are being defensive? How do you know when someone else is being defensive?

Thoughts? Feelings? Questions? Please post your comments below.
